Bearing Surface Comparator

Thanks, I found my old notes and post. Yes Buhay, from the Tubb's design I believe. I will have a 7mm Base that I do not need, but need bases for .224 and .308 if anyone has those to sell or try for the 7mm one?

Mark King should have them.

I am going to call him, but there is a guy on here that sent me a link to his web site and he has new ones. I think he is getting $75.00. Hence why I would love to find a used one for .224 and one for .308 before ordering a new one, but will if need be. Would also trade the 7mm for one of those two. Might even need a 6.5 as it was supposed to come with one, but the seller is still looking for that die.

Bob

I called Mark but he no longer offers caliber inserts for his product. I ordered them from John Hoover at AccuracyOne.com. John's inserts are better quality than the Tubb version.

My 7mm Comparator for the Buhay / King comparator is still available for sale. Reasonable offers always entertained. I also still need one for .308 caliber.

Bob

Turns out that I also need a 6.5mm one and maybe even a .224, though I have been told that sorting by bearing surface for a .22 is over kill. So, I will sell my 7mm Base or trade for a:
6.5mm
.308
or even a .224

Bob

The 7mm Die for my Mark King branded comparator has been sold. I still need one for 6.5mm and one for .308. Not sure if I should bother with .224 as the only thing I shoot in that caliber is a 22-250 and not sure that the gun is even good enough to show that baring surfaced fluctuations make a difference.

Anyone have the 6.5 and .308 available for sale?

If not I will give John Hoover a call as I want to get a Melplat trimmer and bullet tipping die anyway. Maybe a nice package deal??????

Bob

A given bullet will not have the same bearing surface across all barrels. They're relative to the barrel's bore and groove diameters contacting them when shot.

If you can measure your barrel's bore diameter precisely, the distance between those two diameters on your bullet determines bullet bearing surface length. .2980" bore diameters have longer bearing surfaces on 30 caliber bullets than .302" ones. That's the spread I've measured across such barrels.

Slug the barrel to measure groove diameters; same things apply there but about .008" bigger diameters.
