Bearing surface. Beger VLD Vs Hybrid 180gn

I,m about to spec a new reamer for my 7mm. I dont have any 180 Hybrids at the moment. Can someone tel me how much shorter the bearing surface is on the Hybrids compared to the 180VLDs?

The Hybrids have all been shorter than all of the VLDs I've measured by between 0.000 and 0.040 inches. They vary from lot to lot as do the 180 VLDs. The average BSL of the longest hybrids I've measured is the same as the BSL of the shortest 180 VLDs I've measured. There has been an 0.020 inch difference between both the longest and shortest lots of each type I have measured. I guess that means that the shortest lot of Hybrids was 0.040 inches shorter than the longest lot of VLDs but the Hybrids have all been shorter than all of the VLDs by between 0.000 and 0.040 inches.

Thanks for this Tony. It sounds like there is not too much difference between the 2 then so I will work off my previous reamer specs.
Thanks

Your existing reamer should be OK. I have been using the same throat which is correct for the 180 VLDs for everything from the 162 A-Max to the 180 VLD without difficulties.

Tony/Max...what is your FB length that works with the 180's....are you shooting a .284 or 280 or 7mmWSM,,....????.....Im trying to get one figgerd out also....Thank you...Roger

Hi Roger.

The 284 Shehane reamer print in the 7mm Cartridge Guide is my reamer:

http://www.6mmbr.com/7mm284.html

The only difference is I have Mark King use a throating reamer to lengthen the throat by an additional 0.020 inches over what is shown on the print. I gave him a dummy cartridge to send to Kiff when we ordered the reamer that had a bullet from one of the 180 VLD lots with a shorter BSL and I felt I was too close to the donut area with a new chamber. If I ever have the reamer redone, I will make the throat longer.

Tony--Good info ,,,I have sone .284 win brass and am contemplating using it....the FB dims you are using sound just rite.....Thank YOU>>>>Roger

That's good to hear, Roger. 7mms based on the 284 case, including the Shehane I use, seem to have the inherent accuracy that the successful BR cases enjoy. I have always thought they would prove to be great BR cartridges if the top shooters started to use them. I know Jerry Tierney and Charles Greer have done well with them in the West but I haven't heard much about them for BR back East.
