bear

I feel Ballistic tips do a great job killing! I like the shock value, kinda the opposite of the majority here I guess..If you use a partition and get very little expansion then your leaving the trauma to a minimum unless you brake some bones..Ballistic Tip stay behind the shoulder and watch the organs come apart!!

Interesting. I coulda got some of those today. Maybe I'll run out and grab some. They had 140s and something else. In all honesty I wonder how much different they r than a maxes.

I think AMAX's have thicker jackets for target shooting and less rapid expansion..I have shot deer size animals with them with relative success:)

The Berger 140gr VLD will penetrate as good as any other bullet out there save for a FMJ. I know this from over 13 kills using them in my 6.5 Rem Mag. I suppose the excellent penetration is do to the very high sectional density.

Now the Berger "Hunting" VLD will come to pieces when it hits, but not until it has penetrated a good 4", even through a shoulder. However, almost all (except for 2 animals) of my kills with that rifle have actually been with the "Target" VLDs. The Target VLDs don't have the same shock value as the Hunting VLDs when aiming for the traditional kill zone (heart or lungs), but they allow you to take odd angle shots through shoulders and such because they penetrate much better through heavy bone and muscle with the thicker jacket. And the terminal damage to vitals is still very devastating.

For example with the Target VLD; I shot an antelope doe dead center of the front shoulder at 465 yards one year. Complete pass through. Entrance hole was straight through the thickest parts of the shoulder blade and about the half the size of a dime. Exit was directly center of the opposite shoulder as well and about the size of a 50 cent piece. However, the lungs and top or her heart were turned into soup! Complete mush! And the best part was that there was almost no bloodshot meat around the entrance or exit.

An example of a closer shot using the Target VLD in the same rifle; I shot a decent 135 B&C class 5x5 whitetail buck on a run at roughly 110 yards. Put it high on his shoulder, swung with him and squeezed her off. He dropped like God dropped a 10 ton dump truck on his back and came to a skidding halt in the grass and dirt. Got up to him and found that the bullet had completely blew his spine in half while also taking out the top muscles of both shoulders.

So when talking about heavily muscled bears being your quarry and you being partial to Berger and ballistic tip style bullets, I would definitely have to recommend using the "Target" VLD and not the Hunting version. I wouldn't recommend the A-Max or Nosler Ballistic type at all "in that caliber".

But a bear with a 6.5x47L at 800 yards??? mmmmm...I don't know if that is what I would call ethical.
I would question it with my 6.5 Rem Mag and I push that same 140gr VLD at 3130 fps to 3200 fps depending on which load I use. The reason for that is because the 6.5mm calibers don't have the massive amounts of energy to compensate for shot placement that is slightly miscalculated at long range and still provide good vital damage like a big 30 or 338 cal can.

So like "raythemanroe" stated, "a good hunter is one that knows his limitations". Those definitely are words of wisdom to live by if you want to be successful in the field and ethically harvest game :)

Toby - where are you hunting bear?? bear like whitetails are not created equal. the whitetails here in az are hardly 70 pounds. the ones in sask/alberta can be 350 pounds and cost 7.5k to hunt. i will tell you my buddy made a perfect heart/lung shot on a 170 pound bear at 54 yards with a .270 150 grain ; and i was not impressed.

Hoping to hunt bear in pa. Wow I can't believe the mixture of opposing opinions.

Now hunting them in Pennsylvania REALLY changes things up...

Keep in mind that the current World Record black bear came out of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania actually has some of the largest black bears in the entire world. Many make Alaskan and Canadian black bears look like cubs. One bear taken in PA weighed a whopping 879 lbs! So you may run into some very sizeable animals.

Read this link below to see what I am talking about. I truly believe a 6.5mm caliber of any sort, especially the 6.5x47 Lapua, would be greatly underpowered for such massive creatures.

You'll be blown away by this article. A real eye opener to the caliber of creatures you may encounter.

PS: Black bears account for the most FATAL attacks of humans among all the bear species in North America. So you better have some SERIOUS FIREPOWER if one of those PA bruins comes out of the brush and decides to make you dinner ;)

That's insane. U think we'll even see a bear though really? I guess success rate is very low. Sounds like we should carry a hefty side arm on us though. 454 casull maybe?

I shot the #26 all time Pope & Young black bear in New Foundland with a bow drawing 56 lb. and carbon arrow tipped with Montec G5's. It was a pass through shot at 20 yards and the bear was dead with-in another. Getting the brute our was the problem. PM me for pics.

Half u guys got me wanting to cut down 30 inch 7mm rem mag barrel and getting muzzle brake installed. Other half got me thinking if I get right bullet I'll be all right. :(

I have killed quite a few black bears over the years and never considered them an overly hard target to kill. A bullet through both lungs and it is over quick. A broadhead in the lungs kills scary quick also. Not a big fan of copper at all. It tends to blow through without delivering much energy to the target. If I have to use it I always go for a shoulder on the exit in order to transfer some of that energy to the target.

Model 12- mine is not an opinion. it experience of one shot on one bear. i hear there are a lot of bear there. i would think the shots would be fairly short. i would use one of my 30-06s. if i used my 6.5-284 i would use a 129 partition.

I would research PA bear hunting, yes there is lots of bear and I think there the number one for the most taken each year.. I don't think there is baiting and the odds of you seeing a bear may be slimmer then you think! You would probably fair better going to Maine..

I think its only 35 success rate. 129 partitions? Okay. My Lapua isn't way slower than a 6.5x284. I'm learning a lot on here. I thank ya guys and recall appreciate it. Gives me a lot to think about.

The only trouble with the partitions is they have a very low BC if you are taking longer shots. You might want to try an accubond.
