I've encountered many a griz.

I have also encounted many self imposed experts on griz on some other borads. Took many tounge lashings from tough guys who "know bears."

Easy to poke fun at signs like this. I too laugh. Mostly because the only reason I am alive today is because of pepper spray.

When you get to the nut cutting. There is one brand that does work. Proven time and time again. There were many who thought they were a marksman who could get it all done with one well placed shot and a big rifle/hand cannon if charged.

Not all encounters warrant spray much less a firearm.

The reason it made me laugh was the last few words... and seriously, Pepper spray is the most effective deterrent ....

Preacher;

Good for you!! Living just a few miles south of Glacier National Park I am familiar with Grizzly country. Every year we are constantly hearing of the people who just love to hike in this beautiful country and don't 'HAVE A CLUE'. Seriously, the first and most obvious way to stay out of trouble is DO NOT HIKE ALONE. The only way I would do that is to,bend the rules) and take REAL bear spray with me. Mine comes in an 8-PAK and is distributed by a KIMBER SIS Custom RL with laser sights. It dispenses 230gr HP bullets at a rapid pace. Trust me: This is the only deterrent that makes me feel safe. The Grizzly population has really grown here in our area; and to make things worse, the Wolf population is growing out of control. Great! So now the Grizzly's have competition for their food supply.

So keep this in mind when you come out to the Northwest and want to hike in our beautiful country: The Grizzly just woke up and he is hungry! AND,,, The GRIZZLY BEAR is NOT your FRIEND!

After having been about 15 yards from a big sow and her two cubs in the wild, I decided that the only gun that would make me feel "secure" would be something that fires 20mm HE rounds. And, yes, we were very lucky.

My uncle and brother who lived up in the Flathead near where BlueEyedBear lives had lots of great bear stories--they spent a lot of time in the woods together.

Have never hunted Grizz. I did draw a tag this year for area MU7/39 in north central B.C. Canada. I hunt with a 300 Weatherby Magnum with the heaviest for caliber grain wt premium bullet I can load for. My hunting partner and backup carries a 340 Weatherby Magnum and a 12 ga Weatherby auto shotgun loaded with 1 oz slugs.
A wounded enraged grizz is your worst nightmare and his one thought is to kill the man that hurt him. Make no doubt about it Pilgrim an enraged grizzly bear is, and some would argue that they are the most dangerous game on planet earth and can be the hardest critter to anchor and they are spooky smart. An enraged grizz with his lungs full of blood and heart blowed up can run 100yds in about 5 seconds and this is dead on his feet, only problem is he don't know he is dead and he is coming for you. Now for those of you that do not have a clue picture a Volkswagen covered in hair and 5 inch knives 20 of em charging you with a mouth full of very large teeth
and a head larger than a big, did I say big? mans torso and you got yourself a grizz. I passed on this hunt this year, as my shooting skills were not up to par. In order for my hunting partner to trust me I had to be able to ring the bell at 200yds off hand. I could do it at 100yds but not at 200. I had to look the devil in the eye and tell my partner that I was not ready. Next year maybe?
