Bean field Rifles

I’ve enjoyed reading this discussion. Some of you guys appear to be exceptional and knowledgeable shooters. My grandfather taught me to shoot. He had been a rifle and machine gun instructor in WW1. He could really shoot. When I went into the Marines, everything they harped on about shooting (M14s) was what my grandpa taught me.

I don’t hunt beanfields any more, but I do have a power line across my property in Texas, and could reach out to 500 yards. Only shot one hog that far out yet.

A 280 AI, 180g ELDM, IMR 7828, FEd 210, Lapua 30/06 brass is a wicked mamma jamma! 175g Nosler LRAB shoots in the 3's with the same load, 27", 9T on a Rem 700.

Lapua 30/06 brass formed with 14.6g of Bullseye produces 95% fully formed cases. Next firing is clover leafs with the bullets over lapping. Hard, and I mean HARD to kill the primer pockets on the Lapua brass, worth the money, and worth the trouble.

I shoot 168's right at 3000fps with Norma and Nosler brass. I keep hearing all this bad stuff about both but I can't complain. I'm a Lapua fan...cheapest brass there is as long as you don't lose it but I don't shoot a hunting rifle enough to have had a problem, yet.

Mike, that says a lot about Norma and Nosler brass for the 168's! Truth be known, the best ballistics is probably on the 168's to 1200 yards.

I wonder if the pressure goes up on the heavier 175-180g bullets where the Lapua brass is helpful...I don't know.

I tend to shoot the upper pressure accuracy nodes, then again, we are talking deer size targets, not counting X's!

No, no..They don't have to justify any asking price. But I have to be able to justify any purchase of that size to myself. Impossible. I can't. I know what goes into a top of the line build...and I can't justify that price for one. You may be able to but I can't.
I have a friend with four Echols rifles. They cost more than a Jarrett. I asked him what makes them worth the price. He went on to tell me about improved magazines, improved timing, tuned parts, and even the action screws being timed perfectly. I again asked him what makes the rifle worth the price when the reality is its no more accurate, durable, or reliable than rifles for a pennies on the dollar vs the Echols. He finally said, "well, its like jewelry and knowing you have the best kind of like a Rolex." People value different things for different reasons. If it makes him happy to own it, I'm happy for him. Would I pay nearly twenty grand for a hunting rifle? Hell no!

Never shot a deer over a bean field...most the bean fields around here are quite small and on very private "valley land" with close farming neighbors...and that requires a shotgun by hunting law, in my state... so I hunt in the mountains or high deserts with a rifle. Bean field rifle is where they have large open farms you can hunt on, from Inside a warm, comfortable hunting shack with hot coffee and wait for "the guide" to tell ya a big buck deer has come out to the deer feeders, and ya have to stop the card game, and shoot a deer. So they created a rifle for that, and gave it a name...but most any factory bolt gun would have completed the job just as well as the beanfield rifle....but if ya want a custom gun, go for it, no excuse needed, or put a custom sticker on your rifle that says "beanfield"... STP, the Nike swish... Or.." Let's Go Brandon."
