BDL varmint special

How many guys here would criticize me if I took my mint '68 BDL varmint special in 6mm and tore it apart to build a 6AI?

Not me. Guns were made for shooting. It sounds like it has been a safe queen mostly. An AI version will shoot out quicker. Go for it.

If you're concerned unscrew the original barrel, stick it in a closet and screw on a replacement of your choice. Get two if you shoot a lot!

If you have all the paperwork, manuals, box, etc., there's probably a buyer for it in that condition and at a decent price. Take the proceeds and buy or build that AI.

A Remington action is pretty easy to come up with and there are FAR FEWER mint Remington rifles. Not talking about much money for a donner rifle.

These sell very well on Armslist when original. I have one myself in 243 and I'm not about to touch it, because there are other options available without chopping up a mint example of a Remington made back then.

+1

Fine condition BDL's are becoming a scarce lot that is attracting a lot of buyers due to the wave of cheap plastic stocked rifles with utility SPS finishes that are replacing them....... Never mind mint condition that you say you have!!!! Sell that rifle on GB for $1,000 and buy just anything else to build on. BTW......if it's got an attractive stock and really in mint condition like you say it is, I'm not exagerating about $1,000. It can go higher then that........box or no box.

I don't think I could sell it ..but what if I build it to the AI and later on in the future. .I could always reassemble it back to original if I HAVE TO sell it, right?

One I was watching on GB, went for over $1200 a couple of years ago, and it didn't have the box or hang tag either.
Go ahead and convert it.
One less, only makes mine more valuable.

When you consider the marks left on the barrel from removing it, the value would go way down.
I bought a short action 700 ADL off Armslist for $300, that I would use to build on before even considering touching my old heavy barrel varmint special.

Whoa....here is one about same vintage as yours. Decisions..decisions. ;)

You mean 6 digit? If indeed made in '68 then serial number probably over 300,XXX. If it has the flat safety and short shroud and if '68 barrel date code then it was one of the last few made before switching to round knob safety and longer shroud. Never found anyone to confirm exactly at what serial number or time this happened. Seeing as how employees just grabbed a receiver in no particular order and screwed a barrel on then I doubt there is an 'end date/serial number' anywhere in writing.

The guy I bought it from said he thought it was a 68 but wasn't for sure..but now that we are talking about it ..I would like to find out ..any idea how?
