I should add, after you sand the clear you have on there now.
But only if you want a deeper richer red

you’ll notice that when the sun or light doesn’t hit the paint “head on” , there will be darker shades where the sun doesn’t hit and brighter metallic color where it does hit. The “window” where the light reflects the metallic will be very wide with fewer coats. With more coats of candy, this window will close with each layer and the candy color will also become deeper, darker and richer.
Kind of a “deep” explanation. Hope it makes sense

When you’ve got like 4 coats of candy on and your stock is sitting there, outside, in the afternoon - the top Inch of the stock is dark with a very bright metallic reflection just under it and it darkens again towards the bottom where the light doesn’t refract directly... the more candy you put on the more dark shade you get and the reflective window closes. 2 coats of candy and you hardly get any dark shading at all.

MMMmmm the last picture is taken with a flash and sunshine on it. It isn't that light color in natural light. I will take another look at it tomorrow. I hate to get it to dark. I will report back ;}

A guy has to go however the spirit moves him.
There are no mistakes to custom paint, that's what makes it custom 1 off.

Brother it's 8pm here, I've been in the shop all day prepping Zoe's stock for matt black that I'm getting ready to spray.
Sanded a spalted maple stock 4 times, and applied 3 different colors of dye.
It still gets 3 more wash coats and sanding before primer.
Zoe's will be marbled tomorrow.
Now I'm beginning to understand the struggling artist thing.
Say high to mom for me!

I've got a question for @Bc'z or anyone else experienced more than me at painting (which ain't much), what's a good quality tape to use? I always have rolls of Scotch Blue painters tape, but I almost never see it used by serious pros.

I do all my bedding and pillars with this
It also comes in 1/4".
The orange and red are Pro Band, the red turns clean and dosen't roll back for doing
2 tones and graphics.

I use black electrical tape to mask areas like beds. It don't rip if the paint is to thick and you want to pull it while the paint is tacky. Good or bad it works for me.

Too much! TO BE COMPLETELY HONEST, the absolute best bang for your buck is to wrap up your stock, stick it in a box and send it to Brett in Oregon where he does 2-5 stocks at a time, buys bulk material and has a little thing called 30+ years of experience.
Say $20 a can x
2 cans primer
2 cans base
1 can paint for marble
2 cans candy
2-3 cans of clear
Add in quality tape and sandpaper your over $200
Now add in your time-
Prep and prime = 2 days
Block sanding and reprime = 1 day
Paint and 4 coats of clear = 1 day
Clear to cure out 1-2 days
Wet sanding clear flat and clearing last 2 coats 1 day
Clear to cure 2 days
Wet sand and polish 1 day
A week to 12 days with the longer time being the best way to go with Spraycan jobs to allow solvent to gas off properly.

Thank you....i do understand the labor is 10X+ the cost of materials because the skill and patience isn't something that everyone has

Another question [they just keep coming] Can I just clear over this area without sanding? I didn't get the metalflake completely berried.
The reason is when you hit the flake with sandpaper it strips it of it's color turning it dull gray.

Spot in more candy, you've cut through your clear coat.

@Link after spotting in mor candy you might give a coat over the whole stock to make sure it's even. Wait about a half hour before clearing agian, take your time and spray a couple extra coats.

Anyone wondering why after 8 coats of clear you should sand then reclear , sand and buff?
I have a little tip, when sanding stop and look for shiny spots those are the low spots that should be smoothed [sanded] out.
Enough for now I have to go reclear.
