Bbl Tenion for an RPA Quadlite

All,

I am in the progress of machining a fireforming bbl for my RPA Quadlite action. The action is new so I don't have an old bbl to work from.

The recoil lug supplied with the action is going to be left off the action as I am preparing a center type lug, like the Barnard actions) so the rifle can have switch bbl capabilities.

Now to my question. The first .500" forward part of the Quadlite action is not threaded. The illustration supplied with the action shows the bbl tenion about .002" smaller than the action and I assume this diameter is to fit the recoil lug and then slip into the front,non-threaded portion) of the action.

Is this non threaded portion of the tenion necessary? Can I just thread the action ala Remington and let the bbl shoulder butt against the front of the action? I don't see why not but this is the first RPA Quadlite I have fitted.

Also, the RPA drawings don't specify a dimension, clearance) between the end of bbl tenion and the face of bolt lugs, total length of the tenion). Most actions I have researched call out .005" for clearance between these two surfaces. Is this acceptable for the RPA Quadlite?

As there is no recess or coned surfaces, I assumed I could use .005" on the RPA as well.

Thanks for your help.

Bob, I have fitted barrels to a number of Quadlites. I have all the details in my barrel book in my workshop. I will be off line for a few days. If no one else come back to you, pm me & I will email you the details.

I havent yet worked on one, but have a barrel re-change pending on one.

As far as I am aware the barrel tenon has a spigot to centralise the barrel on the action and also accepts the recoil lug, like 700's)

I have been doing some research before I get the rifle to rebarrel, and found this drawing from RPA

Go to the link: http://www.rpainternational.co.uk/technical.asp

Look for the Bolt Head Assembly PDF file and then go to page 33, it shows a detailed drawing,in metric)

Hope that helps

Ronin,

RPA supplied a similar drawing,in US dimensions) with the action, but thanks for the reference.

The recoil lug that is also supplied with the action is indexed to the front receiver ring. Not pinned but close to it.

The issue I have is I would like to eliminate the sandwich type recoil lug and install a block lug in the middle of the underside of the action. That way, I don't have any issues building a switch bbl gun.

I was just looking to figure out what to do, how important the spigot portion of the bbl is. I would think that it is not a factor in bbl fitment. The shoulder on the bbl will put up tight on the front of the action just like a Remington. The purpose of the spigot eludes me.

Alignment, maybe.

I believe that the spigot is there to assist with barrel stub alignment, there is refernce to loose threading in the drawings I recall.

If you want to lose the standard recoil lug I would just subtract the recoil lug width from the tenon length forward of the spigot?

May be wrong, but that seems the right way to do it....

Ronin,

Thanks for that link; I've been looking for a source of instructions about how to disassemble a Quadlite bolt.

No I don't... didn't come with the other bits & pieces in the little box.

You wouldn't happen to know where I could obtain one, do you?

Or perhaps have a spare, taking up room in your parts bin?

Let me know. Maybe we can do some business.
