Battle rifle

If you want a battle proven rifle that won't break the bank and you like the m1a/m14 style.. pick up a Garand from CMP... while you still can.

That said.. why a 308?

I think the recommendation for the 10/22 is spot on. Reliable, accurate, light, small and most importantly.. you can carry hundreds of rounds with you.

The AR10 platform has been proven in combat at this point despite people not connecting it. The M110 is an AR10 rifle platform in use currently by US forces and has proven useful and reliable for it's purposes. I will say I like my m1a springfield but compared to my LWRC AR10 type platform suppressed I would carry little else. Even with the complete lack of support parts it would last longer then my M1A. I will say my M1 breaks often and always expensively.

Also dig the AK comment for those not wanting to break the bank. I like breaking mine perhaps to much.

No FN-FAL yet? Millions in use all over the world.

++++ CETME is junk.

Use it for a boat paddle. FN-FAL's. That is a proven and true "battle rifle". I had one during my service and one at home. Utterly reliable, accurate and has a long arm to reach out.

I saw the thread on here about guns I wish I had back and I thought about a match grade FN-FAL I once owned. I'm not a big military type rifle guy, but I'm still kicking myself for selling the FN. That was, without a doubt, the sweetest, most accurate service rifle I've ever had my hands on. One of these days I'll have another.

I have a 10/22 Target love it very accurate but not a battle rifle to do 250 yard and beyond work, I have a AR 15 for close work and things that go bump in the night.

Thanks for info on LWRC, I do like the REPR it was listed at 3300.00 how hard are they to find and what is current cost if you know. Thanks

Just get a Scar17. Light weight, light recoil, battle proven, and reliable. I've target shot with it to 600 meters and has been my deer rifle for the last couple seasons. I don't think any other battle rifle comes close to touching it in .308.

I would invest in a good shovel . Dig a hole and hide in it for a month . If you try to engage the threats that may arise , you will find yourself in a hole for a lot longer

Such inspiring bravery. ::) Do you know any history? Have you heard of what happened when the Jews and other oppressed minorities simply hid or allowed themselves to be rounded up in the 30's and 40's?

Would you go hide in your hole if your family was in jeopardy?

As to the topic of "battle rifle", this tedium has been flogged so many times on so many shooting and other forums that it boggles the mind. OP, try reading "Patriots" by James Wesley, Rawles. Google him. The book has changed names over the years, but it's worth your time.

++1.....Actually there is a sizable segment of the world that knows that a large % of Americans are NEVER hiding in any hole EVER. They would have been here a long time ago if they thought otherwise.

battle proven, and reliable..

Afghanistan and Iraq. Here's a pretty good overview of its usage in militaries.

Being the best is certainly subjective but when comparing the Heavy (17) to its competition it runs away from them in pretty much every category. The Light (16) not so much in my eyes.

Sorry, the correct term for the FN would be the FNL1A1.

In the more than 50 years of use worldwide, the FAL has seen use in conflicts all over the world. During the Falklands War, the FN FAL was used by both sides. The FAL was used by the Argentine armed forces and the L1A1 Self Loading Rifle (SLR), a semi-automatic only version of the FAL, was used by the UK armed forces.[32]

"Those that ignore history are doomed to repeat it."

You all may not like this idea, but my SHTF gun is an

SKS

This has proven itself on the battle ground, it is cheap, the ammunition is cheap, the ammunition is readily available, and they are also reliable.

I have a Chinese SKS ( the short carbine) and have taken deer with it and even entered vintage military silhouette competition with it.. The thing can shoot, with Russian
military ammo!

And, I paid $120 for 1000 rnds of ammo!

while cheap and popular..it is has no accuracy at more that 250 yds or so...with milsurplus ammo( we will skip yugo and chinese steel core)
i have an ar in that caliber and lots of ammo...again good for short range....only.

the 308 stuff is what keeps them out of short range,,,,
as i said i do not believer there is a single answer to the question...

I hope you like that m1a when you get it. Do not expect accuracy on par with a bolt gun. Also expect to pay extra to keep it shoot great. The USMC has learned this time and time again. If you are happy with mbr accuracy 2 to 4 moa then this will be a non-issue.

The guy who suggested on getting spare parts for your current rifle is on to something. You could get parts a boat load of ammo and some training to put your rifle to the test.
