Batt DS Barrell

I have a question for the good guys. After years of reading post I think that includes you all. I have a new Batt DS action and a new barrel cut by Terry Lenard. If I tighten the barrel hand tight the bolt will not close. 1/8 turn back it closes fine. I assume the headspace is off by .003/5 What is the best remedy for the problem ? Thanks in advance!!!! But you will have to have a smith correct the cone clearance and possibly headspace

Just like Tim said, set up in lathe and cut the proper cone clearance.

A dab of grease and a piece if resin filled solder will tell you about the cone. A "Go" head space gauge will tell you about the the chamber. This is the exact reason I started doing my own work. The lost time, frustration and convenience is worth the cost of the tools. Having to depend on others SUCKS. Good Luck.

There is interference, a dab of solder won't tell you anything when the bolt nose touches the tenon.

How far down does the bolt go without a cartridge in it.
Your shank length should fall in between about 1.050 to 1.060 thousands long.
Did you try closing the bolt with out a cartridge or not.

One reason this happens
When someone laps 10 or 15 thousand on their lugs and they keep their cone clearance the same .010 it was before.

What I’m saying is when you lap your lugs the bolt face is deeper in the action. To keep the same clearance as prior to lapping the barrel tenon is made longer and out of manufacturers spec. But works great in that rifle
That particular barrel gets sold to another DS owner then you end up with this problem

A person might be able to lap this action into this barrel.
If it is indeed only .005 out on the bolt cone clearance
Not that I would go that route

From seeing add in classifieds sounds like he bought a DS barrel from Terry's estate
Barrels Terry had chambered for one of his Bats

Could be a short chambered barrel, this is the very reason I prefer to have an action when chambering. Measuring and reproducing tenons from barrels alone leads to this kind of issue, you never know what has been changed.

Insert your bolt and then screw the barrel in until it touches. Take look at the gap between the barrel and the action. My guess it is very small. Take a piece of normal thickness notebook paper. Cut several strips to use as feeler gages. Back the barrel out a small amount then see how many thicknesses of paper it takes to fill the gap. When you get to the right thickness you will make contact with the paper before the bolt. If you have calipers around you measure the thickness of the paper/papers and you'll know what has to be taken off the cone. I go for .010" clearance here in my shop. The only thing tight/close does is make the phone ring here.

Plus one on that .To add to Dave's advice on the feeler gauge test also do it with a sized cartridge in the chamber to check if the problem is not two fold.
