BAT Bolt Face Modified

I have a BAT B bolt with a .223 BF and would like to have BAT opened it up to a PPC/308. Anyone have BAT do this and know the charge for this service? I could not find this service listed on the website but am certain that others have requested this. Pretty sure he would have to change extractors as well.

I emailed a few days ago but have not received a response from them. Thanks for any first hand experience that you may share.

I have exchanged an un fired bolt with them in the past, but haven`t had them open one up.....

I really wanted to order a replacement bolt for a switch barrel/bolt rig of .223 and .6BR but Daryl recently told me they no longer offer the older style replacement bolt. I placed a WTB ad for a 308 BF BAT bolt but had no luck. This will be a varmint/informal target rifle in a McMillan Tactical A-5 stock. I have the BAT LV 6PPC and BAT HV 6BR competition rigs but I like to use my "old" barrels on the varmint rifles.

Oddly enough, this action, SN B5XX started out with a 308 BF when ordered new for a 6BR build until I ordered a BAT bolt with .223 BF in 2011. Was pricey at $605 but it was what I wanted. I then used the old 308 bolt with a newer BAT MB receiver which I have since sold. Don't know at what point the bolt handle changes were made but my BAT B 5XX, B 6XX, and 7XX actions all used the older style.

I found an old post from 2011 where someone had a bolt opened up by BAT for $70 plus return shipping but I am sure that has increased in 6 years. Mainly interested in cost and approximate turn around time. I'll give them a call.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Send Alex a pm and maybe that is something he may be able to help you out with. His work is excellent and a super guy to deal with.

I would consider rebating the rims if this would be the only 6BR that I'll be shooting but I also have a 600 yard 6BR BAT setup and I'd like to keep everything uniform. That is, however, an option.

My BAT bolts with PPC/308 bolt faces work just fine with PPC cases, so I'd like to have the PPC option on this bolt as well.

Thanks again for ideas. I sent Alex a PM and will call BAT tomorrow.

For anyone else pondering this change, Alex Wheeler was kind enough to answer my PM to inform me that I will, in fact, need another bolt. The Sako extractor is cut too deeply on the 223 BF to work for the 308. That's why we ask the pros!

Thanks to all who responded and thank you, Mr. Wheeler.

Anyone want to trade an old style 308 BAT B bolt for a 223 B bolt? ;)

BAT was kind enough to respond to my email query. Although I ordered and "old style" replacement bolt for this action in 2011, the fixtures have since been rebuilt. That explains it well enough. Looks like I'd be better off to sell my .223 and rebuild on a new action. Thanks all for the suggestions and input.

Update from BAT Machine:

"William,

Unfortunately the correct solution is to modify the action and possibly the stock.

No we can’t make an older style bolt, we cut the fixtures up to make the new design.

It is not recommended to try and open a 223 to a BR as the extractor will be in the wrong position.
