Bat action

I am looking to build a varmint rifle based on a Bat B action Right bolt left port but am wondering what to get.
I want to put a Krieger 1/8 heavy varmint taper barrel on it in 6mm Rem AI. Do I need an ejector or does the case get canted out enough for me to grab, if I do need an ejector is it better to get the dual port? This is my first real custom action build although I have half a doz remmy actions I have tweaked and had rebuilt. I want to get the action ordered in hopes of taking it on a prairie poodle hunt this year in Aug or Sep.

Iamsignal3,

I have a Bat B with no ejector. It Varmint and benchrest gun. You just reach in and get it. I had a M dual port for 600 yd Benchrest. If you don't want to use the ejector, you have to push the case out the right side. I like the RB LP with the ejector. If you don't want the brass kicking out, you can still reach in and ge it. I don't like an ejector for varmint hunting, but do for benchrest.

When speed is of the essence as in BR matches, an ejector is a must for most shooters. Many right handers have gone to a load left and eject right to keep the brass flying away from that feed port. For a varmint rifle, an ejector isn't necessary. That said, I like an ejector on all bolt guns. Just a matter of laziness I guess. :)

Thank you for your answer. Looks like no ejector as I am planning on mostly varmint hunting with it as there isn't really too many places in N.E. Michigan to shoot F class, long range bench or the like. But there is plenty of yotes and crows to keep me busy. Was just making sure there wasn't one reason or another for skipping chasing my empties around.

My BAT model B does not have an ejector. The model B port is fairly long so it is easy to get 6BR cases out of it. This is my first gun without an ejector and it won't be my last. I hate it when a case gets ejected and gets away from me. It seems to always get tossed on the ground and it lands in such a way it dents the mouth.

With the SV action, which is shorter, I might want an ejector. With the longer 6mmAI cases and the B action it might be the same situation.

You can always deactivate the ejector when an occasion warrants it, as long as it's a plunger type. Just push the retaining pin out and remove the plunger and spring. Then re-install when you wish. I do it to my Remingtons. Simple. That way, you always have the options.

Great idea. I went with the Stiller diamondback (6 mm Rem AI) instead of the Bat becuase I will be using it for prairie poodles and woodchucks and I hear from others the Bats are bad about getting dirty and sticking? Plus the Stillers are a little easier on the wallet for us poor folk. Buddy had a stroke last month (way too young) and we started planning to p-dog shoot this summer with the quit smoking cash we started when he was in the hospital. He just got a Rem 204 ruger in all the pre planning excitement. (He is back to 90 percent function and nearly 100 percent on the trigger finger). ;D
Thank you for your ideas and advice.
