Advice on BAT port size needed

I'm getting ready to build my next 6BR and I'm not sure which BAT action I want to build it on. I like the longer B model and have decided to go with the round 1.53 size, RB/LE, no ejector.

However I'm not sure which port size I want. The SB model has a 2.3 inch port. The B model has a 3 inch port. I like the idea of the 2.3 inch port for stiffness. However, without the ejector, I'm a little concerned about getting my fat fingers in there to extract the cartridge. It is such a big action, I probably shouldn't be worried about stiffness anyway.

Any opinions about this?

I doubt you would ever know the difference in stiffness between the 2 port sizes..
Go with the 3" and your fat fingers won't get stuck in the port hole ...

Another thing to think about is extracting a LOADED round. Should there be a cease fire for whatever reason you still got to unload the gun.

Good shooting, Jim

Thanks guys....appreciate the input.

Jim, getting a loaded round out was a primary concern because it measures longer than a 2.3 inch port. I know I could still get it out, but it is a concern if I was in a hurry.

Preacher - I think you may have summed it up. I've followed your advice before with good results.

Highlife - I like the small SV action, but I perfer the longer length of the B model. If I had an SV based rifle I could shoot and look at, I might change my mind, but precision shooters in my area are few and far between.

As others have already said......

Without the ejector i`d go with the Big"B" and the 3" ejection port.

I have the big bat B and it is a great action. You will love it. Yes go with the 3" port since it doesnt have an ejector. Good luck and lets see some pics when it done! Lee

Was hoping I would get a response from you Lee. Seems like of everyone on this forum you have owned and sold more actions and rifles than anyone else! If anyone would know, you would.

How did you like those old issues of Precision Shooting I sent you? I assume your subscription has gotten started by now. That gentleman sent me his most current issues of Precision Shooting, which I very much appreciated, but I was a little disappointed in the content. He sent me three Accuracy Secrets magazines and I was far more impressed with the content in those over the Precision Shooting.

I think i have three more issues to read and i will then pass them on. That was very kind of you and it was much apprecited! Ya i like to buy and sell, its kinda my thing. I have a couple that wont ever go anywhere, but most do. I have settled in on the short range benchrest stuff as my first choice in shooting. I have one dasher on a BAT B and it is really a great rifle. It has a safe spot in my safe. LOL!! you will enjoy the BAT actions for sure. there just isnt anything else like them. My second choice in actions would be a farley, or the defiance actions. I here Jom Borden has a nice action to. I havent had the pleasure! Good luck and keep in touch! Lee

With a 2.3" port you have about .85" between the front edge of the port and the mouth of a BR case. Measured from a no eject PPC SV. I think BAT uses a different length bolt stop for each model (ppc-br-308 etc.).
