Bat action config for hunting?

Im getting ready to order an action for a 338 LM long range hunting rig model M in either 1.53 round or Oct w/ pic.
I asking for recomendations. I shoot right handed so im thinking RB LP???
Also this is basically a fixed position gun im wondering if i should get an ejector? I have not heard of anything new with BAt in the way of actions but was possible wondering about a 3 lug and i really like a repeater but i want the larger stiffer br action pref w integral rail for stiffness. Any opinions appreciated. Also jewell trigger, top or bottom safety? thanks guys!

BAT HRPIC, it a rem long action semi clone with an integral recoil lug and pic rail (get the melonite version). It is a repeater and would be perfect for what you are wanting. I am doing something similar as well. The integral pic rail will help stiffen the action and the rem footprint makes finding a stock easier. Also, dont get hung up on action stiffness, lots of guys have rem 700's with 1.25 30'' barrels hanging on them that shoot very well. I would not use an M for a hunting rig. Way too heavy and bulky for no benefit in the field. I like ejectors in all my guns. I wouldn't own an action without one, too slow for me.

If I was using a 34 to 36 inch barrel it would be mounted in a block. The smallest Bat you can get with 338 Lapua bolt face is M. I would build an Improved version. I have one with an 1.450 diam. barrel 36 inches long. It will run the 300 Bergers at 3000 very easily. It also will shoot 5 shots at 1000 yards in the 4 to 5 inch range. I would also put on a muzzle brake. Matt

+1 on the block. 338 edge uses a standard mag bolt face. Should be able to get 3000 fps with a barrel that long.

The Lapua brass is built like a tank and will last a long time. I can get 3050 with absolute no pressure. I believe I could get over 3100 easily but stopped because I have the first generation 300 Bergers and backed it down to 2993 so they wouldn't slump. It is a killing bullet. We shot 4 buck with it this year and the bullets all opened up. Two of them didn't move and two of them went 20 yards. The ones that moved were shot at 440 and 530 yards by 12 year olds and the shots were back a little 2 far. They still killed very quick. My buddy used my gun and he has a 338-378 and shot quite a few with it. When he skinned his deer he called me and said the 300 Sierra never did the damage the Berger did. He said he is going to switch to the Berger. Matt

If I was going with a single shot Lapua, any BAT 8.5" "M" will work. Go with a RB LP. That works so well for bench or prone. I have lots of RB RP guns, but prefer my RB LP by far.

If you want a repeater you can't go wrong with BAT's Rem clone. You can get the Lapua bolt face but not a RB LP configuration. As was mentioned above...get the picatinny rail built in. They may even be able to go more than 20MOA on a custom order...can't hurt to ask.

Check out BAT's Matrix.....

Click on the "configure action" tab at the right of each action.....I believe they ALL go the the same page.

But, you're going to have to wait in line, as I'm sure that there is a wait time. But, you are going to wait for lots of other components, anyway.

Good luck,
Tod

PS...I LOVE ALL MY BAT'S!!!!

I had a 7mm Rem Mag (for hunting) built on a BAT Magnum Repeater action, glassed and pillar bedded into a McMillan stock, Jewel trigger, Krieger BBL. etc. When having a rifle built with components you do not have in hand, and by a gunsmith that is out of state, all the research in the world can leave subtle things out of the way of your attention. I would strongly encourage you to get your hands on the action you want to use (or one like it) just to be sure.

The Magnum Repeater action is much stiffer than I would have thought and BAT did not leave a huge loading port as many are afraid of. No Sir! Whether you want an ejector should at least partly be based upon how easy it is to otherwise remove a spent cartridge. If I were getting a BAT Magnum Repeater or any other such action with a narrow loading/ejector port, I would definitely get an ejector - and pass on the dual port. Because I had the rifle built for long-range affairs with Medium-sized big game, I did opt for the ejector- and am very glad I did. Unless you need a safety - I'd pass on it if to be used for target shooting, as the mechanism hampers the effective trigger pull reduction (at least in my experience).

I have several BAT actions on bench guns and "assumed" the spent round might be easily removed after firing such as with my 6BR in a Model B action. Not the case!

Lastly, there are a few retailers such as Bruno's Shooting Supply that have a number in stock (always call as his online "in-stock" list is not always up to date - and some are always on order - which can greatly reduce the time waiting)

Does anyone know if Mr Bruce plans to come out with a 3-Lug repeater in long and/or short action? That sure would be great, I would definitely buy one. I know how backed up they are right now though and probably shouldnt take on any new projects currently. You cant say that wouldnt be hot seller though!

Mainly I just hope Mr Bruce doesnt sell the business, because I have not got a chance to get me a BAT yet and it may be a while before I have the funds to. If he does sell it eventually though, which I can certainly understand, I sure hope he sells it to someone who keeps making atleast all the same models, if not more, and keeps the same quality/tolerances.
