Base to ogive measurement tool that doesn’t wander

You really need to be measuring to the .001. Just your body heat will change a bullet more than .0005. Also you need a tool that has an ojive in it instead of a sharp hole to measure with. Measure the point your chamber will measure it by. Measure just any point on that bullet, hold it in a closed hand a while then measure again. We dont work to the half thou or the ten thou in the gun world we measure to the .001, since we dont have a lab and all.

measure to the .oo1, not .0001. Got it, I’ll put apiece of tape over the 4th digit. How much variation do you use in separating lots of the same bullet?

what comparator do you have? Aluminum base or granite base?

I know this has been mentioned before but it bears restating.

Performing precision measurements has three requirements, first a good quality instruments, that instrument must be clean (I use a piece of paper to wipe the anvils), and the most important is a learned skill to use it and produce consistent measurements. The latter is often overlooked, but of the highest importance. A little too much force or too little can have huge affects on the reading.

This is a learned process, just like our sport, how we touch the rifle, hold it to your shoulder, squeeze the trigger, cheek pressure, etc, etc. We all know how extremely slight variations have huge affects on the out come. Well that is the same with precision, consistent measuring.

I use an "iGaging" absolute zero electronic vernier caliper and Hornady ogive bullet comparators. Very repeatable down to +/- .0005"

I also use machinist pin gauges to verify accuracy of my verniers. I've owned the iGaging vernier for many years now and it has always maintained the highest levels of accuracy. Still as good now as it was when I got it brand new.
