Barrles

Hey guys,

I was wanting to put together my first semi custom target gun. I know the action, its a savage target RBLP. I havent found one cheap enough yet but I will. I have no idea on barrles because im on a budget. I know that you cant go wrong with Kriger. I would like to have one of those. I dont know what kind of stock to get. I like the Mc f-class with the ajust.cheekpiece. but again budget. Im doing a 6mmbr norma for 600 yard f-class but also want to do bench. I would like to find a good smith that is resonable and good. Let me know what you think

Well if you are truly on a budget, then a pre-fit is the only way to go with the Savage. That simply means the barrel maker chambers, threads, and crowns the barrel and it is ready to be installed by the end user or his gunsmith. You can get a prefit Shilen for $290 for a Select Match. A McGowen for about the same money. Maybe a few bucks more for a Lothar Walters. PacNor also makes prefits. Check out Jim at Northlander for good prices on Shilens and McGowens. Tiny,
Are the prefits as accurate as the gunsmiths fits? I know that sharpshooter supply builds savages that are good but i wanted to know if it would be better that i buy the parts and send them to a gunsmith or just have them make me one. They will build one for about 1400.

Well any barrel performance is limited by the chambering/crown job. I have brought several blanks thinking along your thoughts that a gunsmith good do a better job. I have also brought several pre-fits and I have no compliants with the chamber work done by Shilen, PacNor, or McGowen on pre-fits. Their gunsmiths do nothing but chamber barrels and they are good at it. They had the reamer in stock that matched my needs. If you want a Krieger or some other custom barrel, you can always send the blank to SharpShooter and have Fred chamber and thread it. He is very good and reasonable.
