Barreled action shipping

Woohoo! I got the call today; my number is up, time to ship my action to the Smith for a rebarrel (first one).

To do:. Package bolt, action, trigger apart all wrapped and nicely packed. Thinking triangle box but where to get one; UPS store?

I'll reach out to Smith for FFL to be sure we're good on destination, and otherwise planning UPS shipping 2-day with ins.

Super excited!

can get triangle boxes free at fedex and wrap with paper to take wherever. fedex is a little pricier and not as fast
I agree with Butch - better luck with USPS. just wrap very good and leave no gaps on ends or sides to let the inside move AT ALL.

I haven't needed any boxes in a while as I have a source from my buddy that has a gunshop. I used to get triangle boxes at the post office. Search USPS and you will find all their free boxes.

You can also take it to the post office. It will probably be cheaper that way.

I would cut (3) strips of ¼" or ⅛" plywood same size as the tube interior walls and slide them on the inside of the tube to give your action extra protection. This may be overkill.

I'm more worried about the ends of a triangle box. A couple extra layers of cardboard well taped into both ends go a long way towards keeping the heavy steel javelin from punching out. And the action should not be able to shift around inside, especially longitudinally. I make folded cardboard spacer cradles to center the thing, rather that rely entirely on wads of newspaper or whatever stuffed around it.

That's overkill as long as the cardboard is of appropriate weight double construction.

Go to your LGS. He's likely got 100 rifle boxes in his back room to throw away. He'll give ya one for free. Leave the trigger on, pack it securely, mail it out.

That's what I've done, anyway.

So, if you go as far as to remove the trigger, think "Pool Noodle" from Wally World.
USPS has a 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" square box 36" long. Pretty solid. Barreled action goes in the Pool Noodle with zip ties to keep it snug. Won't move inside the box and has to be PUSHED out when received. Another short piece to hold the trigger and bolt as needed.
Sent a couple of barrel's to "boltfluter" to get fluted. There and back packed in Pool Noodles and fitted USPS box. Snug as a bug. Pool Noodle? Maybe $3.00? USPS square box? Another $4.00.
Thought about the "triangle" box but IMHO, not heavy enough. Never hurts to do a little overkill. ;)

Another "pool noodle" that can be used is the "pipe insulation" from a big box hardware store. Nice because they are already split, some with sticky tape to enhance closure.

Only problem with the "pipe insulation"? ID is too big for a snug fit on a barrel and the OD is too big to fit in "the square USPS" box. Tried that and went with the Pool Noodle.
And the wall thickness of the Pool Noodle ? Thicker compared to pipe insulation. Don't want to take any chances of "it" (barrel or barreled action) moving inside the box. Nothing worse than an "empty box" upon delivery or damaged barrel moving in the box with one end sticking out. And UPS, Fedex or even the USPS doesn't really care about your package, no matter what they say. You can figure that out by the damaged box and the tire tracks across it. Wasn't like that when you dropped off to ship.:(
Be happy it even got there.

Awesome inputs! Love the pool noodle idea, but i live in the desert; no pool supplies in stock, cause that would indicate you can afford a pool!

I'm going USPS triangle box, I'm wrapping the action in the light foam with cardboard ends to make a "pill" and then layering the bolt and trigger in turns if bubble wrap, then using bubble rolls to fill in the trangle and taping the entire package together before it enters the box. Idea is shipping box will be just a pretty wrapper. If Smith can get it open in under 10 minutes without using fire; I've failed. Cost of pieces is still $10 and i won't cry over a few $$ if shipping on a rebarrel and cerakote. It's coming back in good packaging anyway.

Weatherby Vanguard long action going to Hart for a 26" 30-06 barrel. Cerakote in Graphite H-146 primary choice, or tungsten H-237 2nd choice.
