barreled action recommended to go with howa oryx?

hi,

i have howa oryx need to replace barreled action. ive never put together a bolt gun so im a bit confused as to compatibility;
if im understanding correctly, the bottom of the page im linking is the exhaustive list of actions to choose from?

that being said, old one was howa 1500 6.5creed which seemed nice, but open to upgrades and improvement. primary use as target precision rifle, but its nice to be able to pack on a hunt if i HAVE to, so if i can keep it under 30lb i will ; )

that being said, what recommendations would you all have?

thanks!

ah. the replacement is because several years ago i loaded the wrong powder into a round and as a result the chamber swelled from overpressure (presumably) so the barrel is probably the one component here that would have been fine?

If the chamber is swollen then the barrel is swollen and not useable. I would be suspect of the action also. I have a Howa here that had a high pressure load fired in it. In this case the barrel was fine as the front of the receiver split into 3 pieces and the case ruptured faster than the barrel expanded. Those actions are investment cast and no matter what they say they can't hold up to a high pressure shock. Be careful.

But another Howa 1500 barreled action in it, as that is all that will fit your Howa stock, without some alteration, if possible.
Unless your action is still safe and not ruined by your high pressure load, then just rebarrel it.

brass , once fired, becomes stuck and very hard to eject after one or two shots. my assumption is that chamber is now misshapen and causing the brass to balloon. theres no way the barrel is still OK?
and yes ive stopped using it for safety ; )
thanks for advice

i tried everything from store bought ammo to full length reloads before i concluded I had a problem. there was definitely a massive over pressure incident leading up to the stuck casings, and i *assume* the chamber at very least is compromised. correct me if I'm wrong, as id love to save $$ and not buy unnecessary parts

Without having it here in my shop I can't give you a definitive answer. But from what you've told me I think you're dead in the water. Be careful.

so follow up question: if there was any swelling, it would be chamber/barrel yes? and a simple barrel replacement would be what's needed? theres no need for another action right - just barrel?

thanks for help

No one will give you a long distance recommendation. I won't without having it here in the shop to determine exactly what if anything can be done.

i understand that. would you be willing to speak to what components would generally be compromised as a result of overpressure in a bolt action rifle?

thanks for info and pic! so prudent thing to do is have local gunsmith do diagnostic on it to determine what parts are compromised? thats something theyre capable of doing -yes?

thanks for answering my questions

thanks for your patience.
what would the smith need to be capable of doing - so that i know what to ask?
scanning for micro fractures?

and im guessing by the time i pay for all of that a new action is just cheaper?

also guessing that if a chamber is swollen its probably swelled/fused into the action Pretty good huh

You can get a new barreled 1500 for less than 500 bucks.

There's no way to know what's wrong with your action. Cut it in half and hang it over your reloading bench as a reminder.
