Barrel Vise

I've searched and can't find what I need to know about my new barrel vise. It's a Viper (beautiful piece of work!) with 4 nuts. What torque do I use to tighten these when using the vise? Also, should I wrap my stainless barrel in something to prevent damage?

The simple answer is also really not a good answer. It needs to be tight enough so the barrel doesn't slip as you tighten the action. You will not ever tighten the bolts by hand enough to ever hurt the barrel. Most use something on the barrel from a piece of leather to rosin. I personally have split brass sleeves bored to the proper diameter that goes around the barrel. Many use hardwood blocks and rosin because they're much cheaper. I don't use bolts on mine, I simply put it in a 20 ton vise. Doesn't slip.

Tighten the nuts by hand and then a quick nip with the torque wrench to make sure that the barrel does not slip. All I do to prevent any marks on the barrel is to wrap a piece of paper around the barrel and never had a problem.

The inner tubes off a old roll of paper towels will do a great job on keeping marks off your new barrel..
A 12" wrench will pull the nuts tight enough if you lean on it hard enough 'O)

Good replies so far, thanks everyone! I'm still a bit concerned over just how much torque to use!? Is 25 ft-lbs enough, or do I need more/less? I'm just worried about deforming the barrel if I go all gorilla on this thing!

I ream that sucker down. I can't imagine being able to deform the barrel. I think you'd probably shear the bolts before that happened.

Don't overthink it...My maintenance time tells me I have 55-70 fp on 4 bolts for custom barrel removal.....80-100 on Remington factory removal...Even then it wanted to slip...LT

Put about 15 ft / lb on if you want a specific figure and then try to move the barrel in your vise.
I will bet you that you will not move it. Try less first.

I just put a couple of raps of paper towel around the barrel then I cut a empty TP roll core the full length so that the cardboard can overlap and fit around the paper towel. I then really crank down the nuts. I've never had a barrel slip and therefore I've never marred a barrel. I'd never try to remove a Remington factory barrel with my vice most are not built strong enough to accommodate factory barrel removal.

You might be surprised what you can do with threads and a nut.

You don't need to wrap the barrel with my vise. The powder coating will protect the barrel and act like rosin to hold it. As far as tightening, just tighten all nuts equally. If you break the vise, give me a call.

I can't imagine what my barrel would look like if I broke that vise while using it!! Probably create a "minor" tight spot in the bore. :
