Barrel Vise

Bought a Barrel vise from a member here. Very well built. It's aliuminum won't it leave marks on the barrel when you clamp down? I bought it to use for cleaning rifles also. How can I iliminate marks on the barrel would a hard leather insert help? Lou

i remember reading [where?] someone said to wrap a piece of brown paper bag around the barrel...

i wonder if you have to hone out the ring ....

Brownell's sells rosin. A liberal amount between the barrel and brown paper bag or business card and the barrel vise jaws. Helps to eliminate the barrel spinning in the "buffering" element and the barrel jaws. You want to avoid the metal to metal contact between the vise an the barrel, marring is inevitable otherwise.

I'm one of the ones who uses brown paper shopping bags, cut in strips wide enough to cover the metal to metal contact, 6 or 7 wrap-arounds. Have never left a mark on any type of barrel finish, polished blue, glass beaded or polished stainless. Am using the Davidson barrel vise.

I used a tip provided by Preacher, I cut a empty TP cardboard roll the length of my barrel vice and wrap my barrel at the location being clamped with a couple of wraps of TP slip it into the shorten tube and clam it down. It's never left a single mark yet.

drywall tape works well too. But maybe thats just because i have several 500 foot rolls laying around my truck.

I use drywall tape also in a Davidson vise. I my heavy steel vise for factory barrel removal I use oak blocks bored to barrel diameter with a generous coat of rosin. Powdered sugar works just as well as rosin.

I have recently ventured into the mystical world of switch barrel/bore scoping with a Davidson M700 rear action wrench and barrel vise.

Am reading this thread with interest. Like the idea of the inner cardboard tube from a paper towel roll. I don`t have 500 rolls of drywall tape knocking around in my vehicle so may not go that route.

Have been shooting for 60 years and still learning. Great hobby/sport!
