Barrel vise inserts

For the Savage system you really need to grip the action more than the barrel since they use a barrel nut. You can use a Remington style (round) action wrench, a piece of 1/2"x 4"aluminum plate running through the loading and magazine openings, something of that nature. You will need a wrench designed for Savage barrel nuts as well. Reassembly will require Go & No-Go headspace gauges. Available for purchase or you can rent them from 4D Products/Reamer Rentals.

Get a block of oak that will fit in your vice with the grain running horizontal 1 1/2thick. Get a fostner bit the same size as your barrel. drill in the center. cut in half horizontally with a circular saw. I use some resin and clamp. You can early make a block for any size barrel cheap and it works with no marring.

Get an authentic barrel vise like one that pbike257 advertises in the classified ad section. Then you clamp the barrel and turn the barrel nut. You don't need to Jimmie up your action.
