Barrel Vice

Assume you're pulling a barrel...if it's a factory barrel torqued on by an Orangutan, or a milsurp, better have a vise and properly fitted bushing that's up to the task.

Protecting the finish-particularly blueing- is about making sure it will not spin. Rosin, single wrap of masking tape, paper, etc. all help to a degree but if it spins you're effed no matter what you have against the barrel.

Lighter-duty vises are fine for barrels that have been previously removed but aren't up to the task for many factory/military barrels.

Long as drywall tape is on the discussion "table"......

The paper type is fine, use it for several things around the shop.... great for jotting dimensions on.

That's paper. There's also the glass fibre mesh style. Be sure to get a good quality, some is plastic..... get the glass. Anyway, you can use the mesh as reinforcement for epoxy's. Just sayin,I've used it with VG success in other ways with epoxy. Some folks make barrel bushings with epoxy..... if I was going this route, would seriously consider the glass mesh reinforcement.

Apology for the sidetrack..... carry on.

I have a barrel vice. I can't get enough of them. In fact I'm addicted to them.
I also have a barrel vise that I remove and install barrels with. They are a handy tool.
Sorry, I couldn't resist. :D
