Barrel (bore) diameter.what makes one barrel faster than another ? besides barrel length . I have Lija 26" that shoots 30 to 40fps faster with same ammo than my Shilen Ratchet 16 twist 24"
As in bore diameter?Barrel diameter.
Yup and whether, Polished / Lapped ( and "Broke in" ),.. "Well"As in bore diameter?
All well and true. Many shooters mistakenly assume that barrel length and average MV always have a direct and consistent relationship. Two barrels of the same length can easily have different average MVs with the same ammo. A longer rifle barrel may shoot faster than a shorter one.
Bore characteristics are what makes one barrel faster or slower than another. Length is only one factor determining how fast bullets pass through the barrel. Among other important characteristics are bore concentricity through its length (how the "roundness" of the bore may vary), bore diameter consistency through its length, and bore "smoothness".
Bores are not always perfectly round or equally round throughout. Bores often don't have the same diameter throughout, which is a reason for slugging the bore before determining where to cut the muzzle. Some bores are rougher or smoother than others, which influences friction between the bore and bullet.
Given what gets posted on many forums -- which is often misinformed -- if there is a universal thought with regard to .22LR, longer barrels will yield less velocity than shorter ones on rifles. The universal thought is that a longer barrel will yield greater velocity and more accuracy, but that is not the case many times.
No , not necessarily,So ! Tighter bore faster ?
Once again , depending on the barrel , talking to someone in the industry that tested extensively the average best was about 22”So is there a general consensus or data in 22lr that shows at what length you start to loose velocity? 18", 20", 22"? As many others have seen, answers are all over the place but is 18-20 the norm for accuracy? Now this FPS loss may not directly corollate to loss of accuracy at 50 yards but what about beyond?
It is deep hole to go down but just putting it out there.
Was that average best the accuracy or velocity?Once again , depending on the barrel , talking to someone in the industry that tested extensively the average best was about 22”
