Barrel Twist

I have a 700 Rem in 223 with a standard barrel, SS. Does anyone know what the twist would be of the barrel? No markings on the barrel. My guess would be 1:12.

You can determine it yourself fairly easily with a cleaning rod. Put a good tight patch on the jag and push it in a little way, then put a piece of tape on the rod at some reference point such as the end of the buttstock and mark it with a Sharpie at 12:00. Push the rod in until the mark has completed a full turn back to 12:00, then add another piece of tape at the same reference point. Measure the distance in inches for the rod to complete one full turn between the two pieces of tape. This approach might not always allow you to distinguish between an 11- and and 11.25-twist, but it will easily show the difference between a 9-twist and a 12-twist, which are your most likely twist rates in that rifle.

Works best using a cleaning rod with a freely rotating handle. And keep in mind, Remington's aren't always what they are listed as in the literature.

The only sporter bbl 700 that isn't a 12 twist is the 700 SPS threaded bbl. It has a 20" sporter bbl that's a 9 twist and it's threaded 1/2" x 28.

1:11 is what it is. Measured with the cleaning rod. I have some 75 and 73’s that I load in my AR and it is 1:7. Thanks for the help.

No..... It's a 1 in 12". As a rule of thumb 55 gr bullets are the heaviest you can use. There are a few exceptions like some flat base bullets in the 63 to 64 gr range.

As has ben mentioned, it's unlikely to be an 11-twist unless it has a custom barrel. 9-, 10-, and 12-twist are pretty much all you will find in that range on a factory rifle.

Interesting. I measured it twice because that caught me be surprise as well. But it measured 11” to make a full turn.
