barrel twist - bullets to twist chart?

I am new to forum, attempted to "lookup" info on bullet size/weight to twist/cal? Is there a chart out there that gives this info?
Looking for bullets that I can use in a 1/14", 22-250? And your favorite powder for same?
Thank you for any info you can give me?
Dick

It is not projectile weight that matters, but overall length. Examples:
- A 1 in 12" twist barrel for a .223 Remington will stabilize 70 grain flat based bullets, but fails to stabilize the longer 69 grain Sierra MatchKing.
- Using tungsten powder cored bullets increases projectile weight by 50%, but does not change overall length. Barrel twist rate remains roughly the same.

Using the Greenhill formula gives you a greater than necessary twist rate, not necessarily a bad thing). McGyro, and derivative programs) gives you a more correct answer, but requires some fairly careful measurement of the projectile.

And if you think you're now traveling down the correct path, think again. Barrel twists sometimes don't match what is listed....

Asa gives wise counsel, as usual.

Measure the twist rate of your barrel so there is no question about it. Then, call the bullet manufacturer and ask what they recommend. They usually do tests of their own bullets and will be more than happy to advise you. After all, they don't want a lot of guys on the Internet reporting that their bullets aren't any good. Then, if it's borderline unstable it's always wise to err on the side of too fast.

BTW - must relate an anecdotal experience I had with a nice, new Rem 700 .22-250 varmint rifle. That thing absolutely did not like Sierra 55 grain plastic-tip bullets, or anything with a boat tail. Very weird. Dad's rifle, given to him as a retirement gift. Beautiful thing in a custom laminated thumbhole varminter stock with a 6.5-20x Leupold already mounted... Wouldn't shoot a group worth beans. Bullet holes appeared slightly oblong at 100 yards. Groups were at 2+ inches! Not acceptable.

I switched him to a handload w/Sierra 53 grain flatbase match bullets, and upped the powder charge a tad,H380) and suddenly, with no other changes, the doggone thing is shooting beautiful 1/4" - 1/2" groups at 100 yards, and carrying excellent accuracy out past 300 yards.

Short version: if the 55's don't work out for ya, don't spend a lot of time messing with them. Drop to a lighter/shorter bullet and shoot better groups.

Regards, Guy
