Barrel twist and bullet sizes?

I have a Savage 12 F/TR with a Douglas heavy 24" barrel, and I think it's 1 in 10" twist. Bought it used. My question is Berger makes recommendations for it's bullets according to twist rate. Would this barrel be ok with 155 grain bullets? Berger recommends a 1 in 14" twist.

Check your twist rate with a good cleaning rod, method is discussed on here with a search. But yes my .308 works very well with 155 Bergers and it is a 10 twist Brux barrel.

Sounds like a bit of a parameters issue/barrel twist vs bullet weight. As 40X Guy points out, those 155's work well in his rifle, and are probaby approaching the lower end of the scale for recommended bullet weigh for a 1:10 twist. My .308 (1:10) loves the 168's and 175's the best, but that doesn't mean your's will. You've got (presumably) a good barrel so give it a whirl and see how she does. I wouldn't be surprised if you have a winner with those 155s, provided of course you have the right powder combination. I've learned REAL quick the right powders/grs are as important as the right barrel twist raio.

They'll work just fine. Heck, you can shoot 110 grain varmint bullets through it without a problem.

The twist thing really only bites when you have too little twist. Berger actually is stating the minimum twist that will work. Too much twist doesn't seem to be a problem until bullets start flying apart due to the RPM getting too high. With a 1-10 twist in a 308, I doubt that you can generate enough velocity to make that happen even with very light bullets.

155's are my go-to bullet for light conditions in my 1-11 twist barrel (and the 1-12 too - I don't have a 1-10 any more). Being a little over stabilized has absolutely no detrimental effect on accuracy. I also bang away at varmints with that same barrel using 110 V-maxes. Both group <1" at 200 yards when I do my part.

Here's a good guide: http://www.shilen.com/calibersAndTwists.html
