Barrel Twist - 700 PRC

Had my first custom rifle built (Defiance action, Krieger barrel, etc) in 7mm PRC. Barrel is 26” with comp, in a 1:8.5”
twist. Currently working up loads shooting both 162 ELD-M’s and 180 ELD-M’s with H1000 powder. Seems like the 1:8.5” twist may not be enough for the 180’s, as the groups seem to start to open up at about 2900 fps. Thoughts on the twist rate vs a 1:8” twist? Anyone with same or different experiences?

The 1-8.5 Twist, SHOULD Shoot / stabalize up to, 180's,.. Fine !
Try some RamShot GRAND Powder for, Top Velocities with the 180's,.. My son Hit 3,015 FPS, w/ Grand @ 24" bbl..
You May also, want to "Double Check" your Twist, Manually ( In case you Have, a 1-9 Twist,.. by accident ).
Barrel Makers, HAVE been Known to,.. make mistakes !
PS; Your Barrel may Need, a Few more Rounds Thru it to, "Speed Up",... Good Luck !

1-8.5 is more than plenty for the 180’s
I quit shooting that bullet because of the problems that showed up depending on the the batch of bullets.
Especially past 2850 my 1-8 was having 40% blow up on the way to the target.

1:9 is generally plenty for up to the 180 bullet weight. I have done load development on several 7 mags and 7PRCs that shoot that bullet extremely well in 9 twist barrels. I generally find best accuracy from the 7 PRC around the 2860 fps range with that bullet.

Having a lot of "left over" 168's, both Sierra and Berger, I had a 7PRC chambered to replace a worn out 300WM barrel. After a lot of thinking I have decided to leave the 168's to my 7MM-08 and shoot 180 grain Bergers in the PRC. My barrel is also a 8.5 twist and I am a little concerned that its a bit much for the speed of the 168s. Haven't shot the rifle yet, as I've had some health issues arise since starting the project.

What are the guys with 8 twist barrels using for bullets in the 7PRC?
My sons 1-8 Twist, 24 inch Proof Barrel is driving, 180 gr. ELD-M's up to 3,015 ave fps, with RamShot Grand Powder and NO, bullet, "Splodies" ! He keeps the Barrel COOL and Clean, tho !
I think that, Hornady Fixed the Splodie "issues" with, the recent Batches of, Bullets But, IDK for, sure.

I’ve shot Berger 168 classic hunters in my 8 twist at 3k
Never had issues in fact they hammered with h4831ssc

I have been shooting 9 twist in my 280 AI and some other's that I load for with 175 gr bullets for a long time and never had problems with stability. My 8 twist Saum will blow up 180 ELDM's when pushed fast. When slowed down they were still too explosive on elk out of the 8 twist so I stopped using them for elk. All the 7 prc's that I have been working on are 8 twist, and I have not been impressed with there performance. If I was going to build one it would have a 9 twist barrel to shoot 175 or 180 gr bullets.
