barrel turning

that depends on who you ask.

*personal opinion*
I will turn down cut rifled barrels for my own use, but I shy away from button rifled barrels and will not do it on a hammer forged barrel, but since accuracy is of concern to you I highly doubt it is a hammer forged barrel).

some barrel manufactures dont even like to send out uncontoured blanks because they would rather do the final lapping after the blanks has its final contour. this is due to the stress that is relieved or caused by removing material from the OD of the barrel, thus causing,in theory) dimensional instability in the bore.

YMMV

Send it to one of the deep freeze places when your finished cutting it down and it should be good to go.

the guy i talked to at krieger said that it was ok to turn them down. they do it all the time . i asked him if it should be kryoed again and he said no, so i guess they know i asked about flutting too and he said he would not advise if it is shooting too good. how cold does it have to get .

Any time you recut a barrel you will create a stress situation, and it should be relieved.

The one Cryo place I knew of was called 300 below, so I imagine it gets pretty cold in there..
If cutting was not a problem I wonder why the Krieger guy said not to cut flutes if it was shooting good ?????

i had told him that i had a lv in ppc that was a bit heavy and shot hole in one and he said that he would not touch it if it was shooting, there was always that situation not to get it back the same way. his suggestion. if it isnt broke dont fix it. nice guy he told me to have anyone to call and they would try to answer any ?s that they could.
