Barrel to stock clearance

most comp. stocks have the clearance built in ,,,and it is usually a generous .050" or more,,,,that allows the bbl to be removed and replasced easily and every bbl is not the exact same dia....if you are whittling on a stock to get clearance ,,,use common sense and leave plenty of clearance to make shure the bbl is absolutely floating,,,,Roger

Personally for varmint rifles, with floated barrels, I like about .050 on the sides where it shows, and about twice that under the barrel, which only shows at the forearm tip. For benchrest and competition stock the gap is usually quite a bit larger, which aids cooling. On the other hand, for a custom high grade "hunting" stock that would be unlikely to be dragged through brush I would want more classic clearances around the barrel, and would expect that in the other areas that metal should meet wood with a perfect, no gap fit, more of a showpiece than a working rifle.

I make sure there is enough clearance that no matter the conditions there is always space between the barrel and the stock.
A warm humid day and a warm gun can make a stock curl up a long way. Add to that the weight of the rifle resting on support and you can close the gap fast. Each gun and stock has a pesonality of its own so a tiny bit of free play on one gun may work while another gun needs a bunch more.

It makes a difference what the rifle is and what type of stock.
Some of the cheaper plastic stocks have a lot of flex in the forend and it gets worse on a hot day.
You can some rifles upright and slap the forend and hear the stock hit the bottom of the barrel.

When we`re talking barrel clearance....... why would you speak in terms of dollar bills and thousandsths of an inch...................????????????... on an open "F" class gun at 22#`s....... with clearance being a benefit..... for cooling...... why not 1/8" or more.....?????... mine is.....
assuming a good non flexing stock.......

Probably because the person has already spent all his $$ on the gun and all he has left is a few dollar bills.;)

He did ask for minimum... I guess a couple dimes stacked would give the better option of ~.080"

On one of my rifles, I sanded the barrel channel until a dollar bill would slide from the action to the end of the barrel unobstructed. After that I was getting occasional vertical stringing. A veteran shooter noticed my problem and asked me to lay down on the line in the prone position and grip my rifle the way I would to shoot. While I had a firm grip on the rifle, he ran the same dollar bill up and down my barrel channel, and it wasn't unobstructed. I re-sanded the channel further and it solved the vertical stringing issue.

Bottom line - make sure to test the clearance while gripping your rifle in your intended shooting position.
