Barrel Tip Deflection

Makes one wonder how anybody ever shot accurately before knowing this.
The competitors in British Commonwealth Fullbore matches were probably the first to figure it out. Their SMLE 303 rifles shot smaller MOA groups vertically at 500 and 600 yards than at 1000. The only way that can happen is if bullets left the barrel on the muzzle axis upswing.

Same ammo in Mauser 98 actions shot smaller MOA groups at 500 and 600 yards than 1000. Its same profile barrel whipped different in such a way to reverse the SMLE reason. The 98 action and stock whipped its barrel different than that of the SMLE.

303 ammo had a big spread in muzzle velocities. When 7.62 NATO ball ammo was used, its smaller ES mitigated much of the problem.

Good point Mongo.

But the kind of shooting one does forces what kind of vibration control is needed.

Deer hunting in coastal regions of California require 2-3 MOA accuracy as most coastal deer are shot at 50 yds or so. Then practical shooters have a more demanding spec , then hi-power and F Class and finally long range BR.
Some of these research works help make military rifles and cannons work their best at

Rimfire smallbore shooters oft times have their barrel tuner weight at one setting for 50 yards or meters and another for 100 using the same lot of ammo at each range.

I've read it 3x slowly.......doesn't it say both had same characteristics? Identical results?
