Barrel Temp Outside/Inside -- What Is Too Hot?

Your Bats shouldn't be doing that. I think you've got another problem.
Two BATS (a B and a MB) 3 bolts, multiple cartridges, various powders, barrels, etc…Lapua brass exclusively.

Both are polished SS.

Same result.

Bruce says he can black nitride it all. Otherwise, just live with it. When they get hot, the bolt lift gets heavy, and then my barrel cooler goes in. Work perfectly when not hot.

Not even close. I’ve shot 6BR, 6Dasher, 6x47L, 6.5x47L and 7Walker out of these actions and all are loaded under min., with no pressure signs ever.

I shot in several dozen International Championships in the July/August month change week. Hot in the desert. The competitors used cans of compressed air, same as used to clean computers and cooler kept ice water cooled hand towels, between relays to cool barrels. Worked like a champ. The compressed air shot down the barrel from the chamber, bolt open, cools the entire barrel quickly, with no residue. You can buy the keyboard dusting cans pretty cheap, with a plastic tube nozzle.

Just finished the Texas State High Power Silhouette match at CTSA.... I assure you, pretty much EVERY barrel there saw +120* external temps after a 10 animal set, not to mention the rifles that were being shared so they didn't get 20-30 minutes to cool... Barrels are a consumable, just like brass. :)
When I bought my MPA BA rifle it came with a temp strip on the barrel. This is what the owners manual says. I’m not saying this is rite or wrong . This is Masterpiece arms stance on the issue. View attachment 1440622

Ten shots in 4 minutes from my 308 Remington varmint contour barrel is not all that hot. I wait a while anyway. That works out to be around 440 grains of powder. So if I shot my Grendel loaded with 29.5 grains of powder then 15 rounds in 4 minutes would probably be not an issue. A question why is brass from my AR hot when I pick it up right after being shot but brass from being freshly fired from a bolt gun is easily handled?

So do semi auto rifles get hot slower with a similar rate of fire than bolt guns? Since during the action cycling gas is vented out the gas tube and the case being pulled out of the chamber may have a short vacuum effect in the chamber/barrel? I don't think the gas tube puts gas in direct contact with the case or not much anyway. The hot case from semi autos happens with rimfires and other rifles that don't have gas tubes.
