Barrel Swap

My Savage Axis action is currently in an MDT chassis with a Shilen barrel with a single feed block in the mag port. I added this 6.5CM barrel and that was about 2000 rounds ago. no trouble within its lifespan. It is starting to lose accuracy and I am pulling the barrel. And I would like to add a 6.5-284 barrel this time. They both utilize the 473 bolt face, so I'm thinking I can set up the head spacing to 6.5-284. Am I correct in doing this barrel swap? Thanks!

Should be no problem.

Depending on the intended bullets and how the chamber is throated, a loaded round might not eject without pulling the bolt.

I never measured the Axis port but it is basically a long action
so there should be no problem with extraction since you can
get them in the much longer 30/06.
