Barrel swap question

Texas Solo

B.S. High Master
Getting ready to do a barrel swap on a Savage. What is the purpose of removing the extractor from the bolt?

Is it actually necessary?

Thanks.

SETING HEAD CLEARANCE WITH THE GAUGE IS A FELL /TOUCH..NOT A VICE AND HAMMER. remove it, it interferes with feel
Feel is vague and subjective, measure or mechanical obstruction is far more reliable.

Compare go gauge to brass, if brass is shorter than gauge( hopefully so and within reason) hand tighten barrel on till gauge in closed bolt stops it.
Tighten barrel nut with appropriate fixturing.

If brass is longer than gauge you can easily shim go gauge with clear packaging tape to be the amount you want it longer and proceed as above.

sorry i disagree...micrometers are metal and their used is a SKILL gained over time. CLOSING the bolt on a go gague is also a mechanical skill. feel is involved.
the difference is correct vs close enough...not close enough in my book

I remove the ejector and extractor, it is no big deal, especially if you feel like you can do this yourself.
If nothing else it doesn’t hurt to clean the whole bolt assembly and relube, you owe the gun and yourself that much.

Why would you remove the extractor? Do you then bump the gauge from the muzzle to remove it? The extractor doesn't interfere with the gauge fit at all, no need to remove it. Hook the gauge under the extractor, then close the bolt. You may have to guide it in with your finger if it's 'droopy'.
