Barrel stress on receiver?

I'm building a 6br midrange f-open rifle. I've already purchased a Stolle Atlas action and f-class stock. Now I'm deciding on a barrel...
My question is: with a 1.25" straight (no taper) barrel, how long can it be before it puts too much stress on the receiver? I'm hoping to go at least 28".
Thanks

First, I would put a little taper on the barrel even if it is only .2 and I have never really seen where you are gaining much over 26". Your action should be able to handle that and the barrel will be more stiff than longer barrels.

The first Dasher I built for F-Open was on a trued M700 action, and used a 1.250" straight contour barrel at 31.5". I bedded the first 1.5" of the barrel in front of the recoil lug to provide support, and set two national records with it that first year. You can see the pictures of the bedding here: http://www.the-long-family.com/6_dasher.htm , about a third of the way down the page, at the date 9/6/06. You should have no problems, as I have built a number of rifles using that OD barrel, and the actions handle them fine. Those Atlas actions are very nice.

Cheers,

Chris

I've hung a 30" 1.250" tube on mine and, like Chris, I bedded 2" of the barrel forward of the recoil lug just to move the "pivot" point a little bit ahead of the receiver face. It, too, shoots like a house on fire.

With a straight 1.250" taper, even 28" is going to be heavy but a good bedding job should allow you to run as long as you want to.

The longer barrel tennon of the Stolle Atlas should handle the 28 length . While I've hung 30 inchers on Remington actions I wouldn't buy the fact that the shorter barrel tennon does it as well . I'm sure that bedding can help but the extra steel support is best , my two cents .
