Barrel shims for an AR

My free float handguard bottoms out at about 30 lbs of torque. I have no hope of getting to the next gas tube hole. Does someone make shims that can be placed between the barrel extension and the freefloat handguard?

Tom

Fear of something like that is why i always used a barrel nut that held the barrel right for the gas tube... then a round handguard that screws over that barrel nut... that way i didnt have to worry about that... im not a fan of hand guard and barrel nuts that are all one piece..

You can do the same thing by facing off the receiver a few thou., which is a good idea IMO anyway to give a good square suface for the barrel extension.

Doing it that way ^^^^^^^ effects head space and, possibly, bolt to barrel clearance.

It's an AR 15 pattern rifle.

Sorry, It is the barrel extension and barrel nut I was referring to. The barrel nut is part of the free float hand guard. I will give that guy in Taxifornia a call. Taking it to a smith to have the face turned off would be cost prohibitive. I could buy a new free float hand guard for that cost.

Thanks for the info

Tom

Whose upper, ff handguard? You could contact them. Sounds like one part was made out of spec. I'd guess its the barrel nut. Torque spec is a wide range, something like 30-80ft lbs. Unless you can show that alignment isn't possible within that range, all parts are OK.

Thanks for the replies. I found them on E Bay after one of the members sent me an e-mail.

Thanks

Oil, oil, oil. The extension collar needs lots of oil when you reaf it over 45lbs. Tightened, loosened, tightened, loosened, as you work it over to that other hole. The last thing you need is a canted barrel in the upper from jumping on the wrench. 30 to 80lbs is the zone. Dusting off the face is ok but don't take more then .010 off.
