Barrel Serial Number

I got an Email this morning from my Smith with pictures of the serial numbers on the barrels he is installing for me(which should ship today ;D ). This is something I have yet to hear about. What is the significance?

Is he keeping track so he knows headspace dimensions? This would be a way for him to chamber and send you another barrel without you having to send him the action next time.

Most all manufacturers serial number their barrel blanks. That way they can keep track of what lot of steel they came from, who they sold it to etc in case there are issues down the road. Guessing that is what you are referring to as your smith sent you pics of the end of the blanks?

I plan on putting the last 4 digits of the serial number of the gun the barrel was installed on as I am building another switch barrel and want an easy no fail way to keep track of the barrels.

This has been very informative! Thanks! Being able to track and verify a barrel to manufacturer and lot makes a whole lot of since.

wwbrown, that is brilliant, I don't "plan" on having enough switch barrelled rifles to get the barrels mixed up, but you never know ::)
