Barrel/Scope Alignment

Hello everyone. New to the forum. Had a friend tell me I have been missing out on a ton of knowledge found here. Glad to be part of it.

I need some help. I have been fighting barrel/scope alignment on factory and 'built' guns for 15 years and have been using Leupold Standard bases to correct this. To clarify, the screw holes for my bases are out of alignment with my barrel so I use the standard bases to resolve the issue. I have some magnum calibers and want to go to Nightforce and they recommend a one-piece base set up but I don't want to go this route because of my alignment issues.

Is there a gunsmith out there that can get my action, my barrel, and the screw holes in the top of my action to magically align!

I am pulling my own hair out here!

Many thanks in advance!!!!

Once again, another endorsement for the Burris Signature Zee rings with the off-set inserts of .05, .010, and .020".

Using them in every combination imaginable will easily correct for any mis-alignement between the receiver, barrel & scope mount base.

Had a Ruger #1 re-barreled several years ago, the gunsmith did an outstanding job with the Shilen barrel, but, ( there's always that), he must have mounted the quarter rib canted off center because I quickly ran out of windage adjustement to the right, when with the factory barrel there was no problem.

Using the off-set inserts I was easily able to off-set the scope the amount needed for correction. The rifle is sighted-in now with the windage adjustment very close to the center of travel.

Of course, another advantage with the inserts, zero's or off-set, is that you will never get ring marks on your scope tube.

+1 for fdshuster. I have been there done that. Burris Signature Zee rings are all I buy now.

+1 for me too.I love the signature zee rings on a weaver base or picatinny rail. They are easy to make changes with and real reasonable in my opinion. You may have a hard time finding them as burris moved their plant and wont be up and running till this coming january.

One of the better investments I made was for one of these:

If you can find them anywhere I agree with the Burris Signature Zee rings but I've also had success with Millet Angle Loc rings...

How much out are you talking? Out of alignment to your barrel or action?

If action then I would think a gunsmith could open the holes bigger favoring the side it needs to go to and retapping.

If barrel, then I think a gunsmith could re-index or re-chamber the barrel to better oreint the point of aim (put error up or down as opposed to left or right) depending on how it was indicated in the lathe the first time, end to end or breech end like Gordy Gritters' method.

I would have suggested contacting the manufacture, but I noticed you said it was factory and ''built". Which leads me to think something (setup) might have been overlooked or missed during chambering from who ever built it. If it's that bad out, you might want another gunsmith to look at it anyway.

I think you ought to be able to use a one piece base if you want to. The Burris rings are great, It's nice to have all that elevation adj. and protection from ring marks.

There are a number of highly qualified smiths here, some are listed on the main page and should be able to get you fixed up. Shouldn't be any magic to it and should be a straight up inspection and fix. Might cost a little though. :o

Welcome to the forum, Jim

I'm not sure what he is talking about either, but if he means the action threads for the bases were misaligned, he can have a smith use blank bases and drill holes in those blanks to fit the misaligned action threads.
