Barrel re-assembly

I'm having a gun re-barreled with the same contour, shank length barrel as the old one. The recoil lug does not have a notch in it for alignment so I put a mark on the lug and and bottom of the receiver. Will it be a pita to get these to lign back up properly so the bedding in the stock will not have to be redone?

Thats where a recoil lug alignment tool would come in handy..
It will be tough to hit the exact same spot without one...

If your marks are true and you do you due dilligence to align them, you will be fine. If its a smudge off a couple of degrees I bet you wont see it. And yes I said a couple, not 1/8 of a turn (for the internet gunsmiths).

Its getting done at the barrel manufaturers shop. I'll let them know about the marks I made and ask them about an alignment tool. It's a Rem 700 action.

They probably have an alignment jig or some other mechical means of locating the lug. I wouldn't want to screw a dozen or so on a day without one. I wouldn't sweat it, they do it for a living.

You could ask the smith to pin the lug while they're about it. That would totally eliminate any issues with alignment.

If they pin the lug WITH the marks aligned you will be fine. If your marks show a lug that is rotated and they pin it dead center it will cause issues. A slightly rotated lug (a few degrees for the internet smiths) is OK if your bedding matches that. Best bet is to call them and explain what you have / want.

Are they going to do any action truing? If so, you'll need to do minor touch-up of the bedding at the recoil lug, anyway.--Mike

You can file off the sides of the recoil lug ans a little off the bottom if you are a little off on the retighten

Wouldn't it be easier to grind or mill out the bedding material, just leaving the contact area that is behind the lug? Still, if they are truing the action face...that's going to move the lug backward, and it'll need to be touched up, anyway. Sure, with only a few thou taken off, it'll bolt back in, but the action will be stressed.

The op hasn't answered me yet about this. It changes how I'd answer his question.

Hell YES! It would be easier to rebed. I think we are all over thinking this LOL :)
