Question RE Aftermarket FIring Pin assembly

Heys guys so I put together a Loaner rifle for my local range outlaw field precision matches and I wanted to know after all these years I have been using custom rifles. So I haven’t bothered looking into this issue in a long time.

My thought process behind this most of this ammo will be factory. I don’t want to reload for a loaner.

Rifle is built on a factory Remington 700 with a Timney 2 stage

My main question: is replacing the Firing Pin/Spring/bolt shroud, does anyone still make a complete blueprinted/correct Firing Pin assembly?

Depending on the action you have IMO.
While I have ordered a few for my BAT actions over the years I would say it's easy if the bolts are made with the precision of BAT. There are other custom action that would be true as well.

My original post was updated. This is going to be for a factory Remington 700 with a Timney two stage trigger.

I agree about that, I will have it done down the road for sure. who is capable of doing that these days? I know not everyone works on R700 anymore with out a full blueprint.

Both Holland's and Gre-Tan only come with lightened pins. The only factory weight assembly's that I am aware of is from PTG. Roll of the dice there, order and cross your fingers. Too bad the factory assembly's aren't available from Brownells anymore, that was the easy way.

My business name will be going on the rifle and why wouldn’t I give a loaner rifle that preforms well.

One of the easy upgrades for a stock Remington is a better FP assembly. Reducing lock time helps

Personally, I have never found any issues with the factory 700 firing pin assemblies, but like a lot of other things, a lot of money is made by inventing non existent issues. For the really small details to become important one needs to be dealing with something better than a factory rifle with factory ammo. I do some checks on any action that I have, to make sure that something did not sneak through QC. but I have never found anything relating to the FP assembly that would matter for an application like yours.

GreTan seems like your best option for the FP assembly and I would check out @boltfluter or @carlsbad for the bushing. Both are top-notch. Oh, and @boltfluter could add on some really great looking fluting.

Bushing is useful if you are using a high pressure cartridge and are having problems with cratering or blanked primers. BRs, Dashers, 6XC, Creedmoor and other new cartridges are repeat offenders. 223, 308 and other common cartridges start having pressure issues as you max out the load, especially with a heavy bullet. And I've done quite a few for heavy rifles like 338 Lapua or 300NM.

Mild or medium loads generally don't need bushing. the firing pin assembly was designed for the 30-06 in 1906. Pressures were low then. Metalurgy was less relaible. so they chose a .075 firing pin in a .080 firing pin hole. I think if they were doing it today they would use a .059 firing pin in a .062 hole.

it is not the gap between the firing pin and the hole that causes the problem. It is just the overall diameter of the hole that has to be spanned by the brass of the primer with cartridge pressure behind it. 30,000 lbs is no problem with a .080 hole. 60,000 lbs generally is. I've never had anyone report a probelm with any cartridged after bushing.

I don't need work, so don't this this is a sales pitch, just knowledge sharing.

Gretan is a great source for parts. Quick shipping and good prices. I have encouraged Greg to start bushing again so I am not so busy but he says he has too big a backlog.
