Barrel Question

Do barrels that are hand lapped such as Bartlin Pac-nor, Lilja ect. need to go thru "shoot and clean" break in process? Thanks

Alot of guys say no. I have chambered about a dozen barrels for myself and found for me at least If I shoot 1 and clean I usually stop seeing much if any copper by the 6th shot. These "factpinions" are worth what you paid for them.
If handloading I like to load up some to look for pressure while i foul and clean, saves me from having to take apart a bunch later. But I can shoot into a dirt pile in my backyard. I may not do it at all if I had to go somewhere to do it.

This^^^ your basically fire lapping the throat.

Yeah, this is true and it for sure cant hurt anything to do the clean and shoot for the first outing. I have barreled actions and had the first bullets out of the bore be as good as any other group. Some never needed anything as far as a break in. This past two years though I have had three barrels do something strange. All three were what anyone would call "high end".
I would start out with a clean bore and shooting real good groups, then the groups would soon open up some. I quick look with my borescope revealed one land completely covered with heavy copper fouling. It would take considerable effort to get it off the land and get the land cleaned up and completely free of the copper. Had I known the rifle was doing this I could have just shot a few and cleaned.
From my experience, not all barrels necessarily need some sort of break in. The fact is though that if your barrel does need some break in then it will not do it by shooting over top of copper fouling. If it is going to take say 30 shots to get the burrs or whatever smoothed up, all shots fired over top of copper don't count because they accomplish zero.
I would have to say that again, it wont hurt and if you don't have a borescope then it is probably good advice to do the shoot and clean. Best of luck sir.

Oh well, this has been beat to death on all the gun forums. Do a search first and read! First thing you need to do is find out the reason a newly chambered barrel fouls. I don't do a "break in". I address the problem before shooting.

I guess it's wrong to answer a O.P question Butch talked about before or not. Truth be know theres alot of threads repeated on here if you dont like it dont respond and move on. If Forum boss doesnt like it I'm sure he' ll lock it down or worn people but as far as I know it's never happened

PM what you are saying. I'm old and easily confused.

No need Butch could have easily just moved on instead of being critical.

Being critical? No, just pointing out that there are several threads on this and would give him all the material he would need to make a decision.
Is it wrong to mention why they foul? I guess I need for you to vet my posts?
