Barrel question

I have a brand new barrel never touched . Today I got it out of the box and cleaned the bore and was looking through it,and it looks like the rifling is closer,, tighter pattern one one side)) on one side than the other . So I take a felt tip marker and mark the side of the barrel that the rifling had a tighter pattern on. Then I closed my eyes and rolled the barrel around so I don't know where I marked the barrel with the marker and look through the barrel again . I find the spot where the rifling looks like it is closer to the bore, then look at the side of the barrel and it ALWAYS at the mark that I put on the side of the barrel . Is my barrel crooked ?? how can I tell if it is straight?? I really don't want to put it in a lathe, because it may mark the barrel and barrel maker will say that I bent the barrel. I know that it really needs to be put in a lathe to be able to see if it is straight. Should I take the barrel to a well known BR gunsmith and have him check my barrel and bore scope it ???
The box the barrel come in don't show any signs of abuse.
THANKS, Art

PS: I did contact the maker and he said that there is no way that it could be crooked.

Art, Have you tried to duplicate that same effort with another barrel. In my way of thinking if you cannot duplicate that same effect then something has to be wrong with that barrel. I would certainly ask a reputable SMITH about what you are seeing. It does not sound right but then again I have never heard of what you are describing. Wish I could offer more man. Bill,I'm in NC also)

I have 4 barrels to compare it to. Three of the barrels have none of what I'm seeing in the new barrel, and one I think has some but is a good shooter.

Art, I replied to your e-mail and Don's also. Don's was returned undeliverable for some reason. Just wanted to let you both know that I did reply and it was great hearing from you guys. Maybe we could get together sometime in the future and shoot. Bill

Art, Don sent me another e-mail address to try and it was returned also. I have checked all that I know to check here on my end. I am able to send e-mails to other folks. So, I don't have a clue as to what the problem is. Thanks, Bill

Is the barrel a cut rifling or a button rifled barrel?

The last time I checked a carbide button does not flex much and therefore it would be difficult for the rifling to deviate in its width. If the barrel is cut rifling and has a hardspot or deviation in it the cutter might follow the path of less resistence. I would ask Jack Kreiger, Mike Rock, Mark Chanlynn, or Boots Obermyer about cut rifling. I would ask Dan Lilja, Tim North, about the button rifling.

Have you bore scoped it? Or are you just eye balling it. Some times what you see in a shiny reflective barrel is distorted. Like a hall of mirrors at the midway show.

I was just eye balling it . But I took the barrel to Tooley's and he scoped it and run a lead slug through it . And every thing showed ok, so I feel better about it now . Art

PS: And yes Tooley could see what I was seeing, some what ) but he could'nt see it on the slug or with the bore scope. So I think it was just at the end of the barrel that will be cut off. And the rifling is cut with a botton . Art

With all due respect you still have not told us if it was a cut rifled barrel or a button pulled barrel. I see imperfections in barrels more often than not. Usually contamination in the steel and a stain.
