Barrel Node(s) - How to find?

AR Shooter

Silver $$ Contributor
Have not found a thread about finding the barrel node(s) for locating where to rest the barrel when firing and wonder if it is or is not important. Here is a brief write-up for BPCR rifles which are shot from crossed sticks rather than rests, and am wondering how much of it applies to our F-Class and other rifles. BPCR rifles have a weight limit of 12#2oz for iron sights & 15# for scoped rifles.

What say you? Of any import to a high power shooter?

You will find more information searching for "barrel sweet spot" or "dead spot".

It all depends on where and what you place the rifles contact point on. The age old thought of hard to soft contact points being better than hard to hard is basically a way of mitigating this vibration. A bipod off concrete can be difficult to manage.

A free floated barrel, with the forearm on the rest or supporting by a bipod is not likely to benefit much if at all.

A fully bedded barrel might.
Since I don't travel with the big kids, I don't know if they are anal about the exact spot the the fore end is placed on the rest. If they are, because they say it will effect group size if they get it wrong, my guess is it is for the same reason. They just might not have thought about it.

What I can say with certainty, is that finding that sweet spot when resting on the barrel makes a huge difference. Being behind a 15 pound rifle that starts to slide instead of bounce off a rest can make you a believer.

Going to the other extreme, the latest project is a 12 pound, 30" barreled rifle chambered in 22 short. In and out of the dead spot can make about a 1 1/2" difference at 50 yards resting on a hard surface and 1/2" resting on soft.

The methods in the link provided do work.
