Barrel Mod for Different Action

I have a 308 barrel that was setup for a Defiance Tenacity/Ruckus. I would like to use it on a Surgeon. Both are 1.0625 x 16 actions.

The action face to bolt face on the Defiance is around .967" and the Surgeon is .950".

To make this barrel move from the Defiance to the Surgeon, is it as simple as taking ~.016" off the barrel and possibly cutting the nose recess a bit deeper?

Or, does it need to be chopped off and rechambered?

I would take a few more measurements, like the face of a headspace gage or piece of brass to the barrel shoulder, just to get an idea what might have to be modified.

do both actions have a similiar bolt nose.

I find it helpful to draw a sketch of the tenon and reciever, with only the pertinent dimensions included. That often helps me figure things out. Other who are not "visual learners" may not need this.

If the measurements are further on the Defiance than the surgeon, and the barrel was previously fitted to the Defiance, you have the option of cutting everything shorter to fit the Surgeon, or you could simply add a .016 shim to relocate the shoulder and establish headspace etc. WH

This would be something I would make. Because it is difficult to cut a shim that thin, I might cut the shoulder back 1/8, then make the shim .141". Same cat, different ways. WH
This is the way IMHO. You could adjust headspace via shim thickness if you needed.

Only caveat is if you need the barrel clocked a certain way. Then you'll probably need to recut the whole thing. Others might have a better idea.

This sort of retrofit project is practical or impractical, depending on whether or not you do your own work. Because I can do so, I often re-purpose barrels as described. When I was actively gunsmithing, I always had some customers of limited means. For these guys, I would try to stretch that gunsmithing dollar by just charging a relatively modest hourly rate and utilizing take-off barrels. This allowed them to enjoy their hobby and afforded me the opportunity to do some problem solving. For myself, I have shelves full of barrels and often swap them around, just because I can. So it is that I have Savage barrels on Rugers, Sako barrels on Winchesters, Winchester barrels on Mausers, Mauser barrels on Enfields. Often, they work out nearly as well as I imagined they might!
