Barrel Melonite

I have tried to find his comments but didn't see anything about Melonite . I have had several barrels treated with the salt bath nitrite process by MMI Tru-tec and they all shot great after I got them back. I had one treated last fall by another company and it ended up being a $600 tomato stake. When I received it back, it wouldn't screw on the action. I finally was able to determine that the threads had been "bent". My smith worked that out and we got it screwed on. Now, that could have happened in the UPS truck. No way to really tell. Anyway, this barrel that had shot in the .250 range (6BR) wouldn't stay under 1" ! I tried everything I knew to try and finally gave up. The rifle now has a new Krieger barrel on it. One thing that I noticed about the barrel when I got it back was this: When running a patch thru the barrel, it seemed to get very loose about 2/3rds of the way down the barrel. I tried that several times-always with the same results. It just wouldn't shoot after the treatment.

It is in the gunsmithing forum.

Try that. Melonite is salt bath nitriding.

I finally found it. Joel Kendrick was with MMI Tru-Tec when I had my barrels treated there. I don't know if the company has changed names or if Joel has changed companies. I had several barrels treated by them and they always shot great after the treatment...

mmi trutec will only take barrels from approved gunsmiths now. there are several companys that do it I think one in ohio ,
and then there is controlled thermal technology in the phoenix Arizona that was recommended to me and I have used them and they did a good job and turn around time was a couple of days, I am getting ready to send another soon! Hope this helps Ron
