Barrel markings on a Remington 40-XB

Not sure of the barrel markings on this rifle. Was told it could be an early Hart or other. The barrel has no other markings on it at all. The rifle is a 40-xb serial number 32xxx B.
Thank you for your help.

Yours are common markings as far as I know. Also, there does not seem to be any way, or records, that document the source of custom shop barrels. There is rumor that at times Hart barrels were used on some rifles, but I have never seen proof. To ad to this uncertainty, according to the Remington that now exists, virtually all the custom shop records were accidentally damaged to destruction in the move. In it’s hay day, barrels were manufactured and button rifled in the custom shop.

That was a common inspection mark or THE inspection mark back in the day. If Hart ever made barrels for 40x this mark does not signify a Hart barrel. At one time, I had this all squared away in my head. Easy to get them mixed up. I think a lot of information is like an echo chamber. One smart person sees the 'heart' mark and assumes it is a Hart barrel, writes about it, then it gets adopted. I think that Mike Walker even discussed this issue at times with friends.

this pic is fairly early 40x, 22-250 blue receiver and blued barrel, SS with safety, Receiver says 40-X and other side of barrel has REP in circle. It is the version using the 700 receiver and 'modern' bolt configuration. This barrel is about .72 or .75

I have a 22-250 single shot 40X with a heavy stainless bbl. & it doesn't have a date code also.

for a period of time you could call Remington and they would look it up for you. not 100% accurate though, I did it for the same rifle twice and got two different answers.

Have you determined the twist for the barrel? Since it’s drilled for iron sights and it’s a 7.62 maybe it was going to be set up as Palma rifle. Might be fun to have Dad’s rifle set up as a classic. Just plug the holes on top and stay away from scope and set up a sling rifle. You would get the bigger bullseye. Just an idea, still a nice old 40x. Cheers

Believe it is a 1:10….but need to verify. It has an older Unertl 10x on it but he wants to shoot 1000 yards. Pretty sure that the Unertl will not have enough to dial up for that, but who knows.

It is a 1:10 twist and mounted a modern optic on it. Shooting Sierra 175 gr and Varget powder. She will stack them in there. In load development, no group was over 1” and the best was .329 moa.
