Barrel marking question

I was shooting a friend's Remington XR-100 in .22-250 today. The barrel has small block lettering stamped as follows: WARNING- TARGET RIFLE- FOR TARGET SHOOTING CONDITIONS ONLY

It was windy at the range and we were still whacking distant steel targets with it. Are we in trouble with Remington?;) What's the intent of this message?

IIRC the XR rifles were equipped with 40X triggers. If so, that’s likely the reason for the warning.

I'll always remember how thankful I was back when I purchased one of the new firearms (Ruger I believe) that had the ominous warning that I'd better be careful or I could shoot myself with it. Until then, I had always played with guns as if they were harmless toys. jd

If I had to guess, it means a rifle with no safety and a hair trigger. To be shot only under very controlled conditions.

Luisyamaha
makes sense to me now, thanks. The chamberings indicate it's a critter target shooting rifle.

......edit, the picture shows the trigger with a safety lever. Can't imagine "Big Green" would ever let a rifle leave the factory without one, given their past history.

Yo, Jd. That old cream puff Bill R. would have negotiated us down to single shot BB guns. That he manufactured, of course. He was consorting with the enemy on the "assault weapons" Ban '90 what year was the first fed. bans. The very first one.. With other than Normals us. Originalists believers of the Constitution as they say. He made sure his rifles were not unfairly targeted. Zero, did zero protecting our rights. Copy That Brother's...S&W was only not as horrible or blatant. It's always the money, not principles. Let the screams begin. I'm, Mike In CT. DAMIT.. I present the lovely useless "Hillary hole" side plate action on beautiful Revolvers. Why Do those things even exist??.. All this noise makes as much sense as V8 super car engines. Enzo F. should be ashamed of those exported v8 toy models..Dont get me going about 4 door Massarottis either. mike out

As I recall, it all started back in the seventies when some fool shot his self with a traditional "pre-transfer bar" Ruger single-action six shooter. There was a bazillion dollar law suit being pushed, and I can't remember how it settled. What we do know is that Ruger six-shooters changed forever, and we started seeing safety messages stamped on the barrels of guns.

Shouldn't surprise anybody -- we live in a society that has to be warned about drowning babies in buckets, and told not to eat laundry detergent. jd

You need to keep in mind that many of these large claims are awarded by juries. These are your peers deciding what they think is proper with the circumstances. If you are a manufacture, I assume you are going to do everything possible to prevent being blamed for someone else's actions.

If it took printing "DO NOT SHOOT YOURSELF", that's what I would do to keep someone from claiming no one told me. The companies are not stupid and print more than they feel necessary, other than promoting and identifying their product.

Never under estimate the number of stupid people in the world. It is much greater than u think.
I think it was George Carlin who said,
"Just consider how dumb the average person is, and then realize that 50 percent of folks are even dumber than that."

I can't remember the last class action to go to trial. Sandy Hook v Remington, maybe? Most are decided in deposition and settled out of court by lawyers. Plaintiff gets paid, defendant gets to control media coverage and public opinion after the fact.

Many are years later and not allowed to be talked about.
