barrel life on a 6.5-06?

Well, it's all relative. Long 20+ round strings on a hot summer day eat a barrel faster than a few rounds and letting the barrel stay cool. A minimum accuracy standard of 1/4 moa means the barrel gets replaced sooner than a 1/2 moa standard.

So I've got a couple of barrels sitting on the shelf that are no longer quite competitive for 1,000 yard shooting, but they would be fine for mid-range score.

A barrel is a consumable, just like powder, brass, bullets and primers.

Dennis, I think I mistyped the sharp shoulder long neck comment.

I meant to say 'sharp shoulder, short neck' is worse than a 'shallow shoulder, long neck' from what I've read in various places. Again, that kind of reading changes with the wind though based on whomever happens to set a new record in a certain class.

Thanks for your replies, you're making me more and more excited to build this guy.

Rust- Barrels are consumable just like powders and bullets, sure. They're also expensive. I don't own a 338 LM because it's expensive to feed. I don't own a 408 Chet Tac because it's super expensive to feed. I wanted to make sure before cutting the barrel on a 6.5-06 that I wasn't going to make a 1000 round, no setback allowed rifle.

My goal is to have a good 6.5mm long range round that's not going to burn barrels out like a hooker uses up cigarettes. The expected accuracy minimum I'd keep before dealing with it is probably 1/2-3/4 MOA. If I need to set it back that's fine, I'll do so.

Dennis,
I was not talking about water volume when I said the 6.5/06 holds more. In the reloading manuals the difference in grains for 'X' powder can run up to 8 grains

That's because they keep the pressures down to original levels when loading the 284 case. When loaded to equal levels with Lapua brass in modern/custom actions, there won't be any meaningful differences to speak of in case capacities or barrel life.

Bohem, I tryed to tell ya, I've been shooting a 6.5x06 for about 10 or 12 yr. I shoot moly and do so because it works for me. I have never got less than 2000 rounds out of any barrel that I've shot this way with the 06 or 06 AI either one. This is the truth and have the records. I don't shoot comp. any more but I used to shoot tactical with the 6.5-06 and very seldom lose to any 308 if ever but have lost to some 6mm stuff.
GOD bless,

Mac-

I believe you, I actually started this as a parallel thread to the other one on SH. I will give you a call sometime soon, I've been really swamped with work and home responsibilities.

Thanks again, I really appreciate the time you took to address my questions.
