barrel lettering

G, I don't know anything about lithography, but I got a lady that owns a sports engraving shop to do the I.D.'s on a couple of my rifles. It's not very deep, but is permanent and very nice looking. I also know a guy who CNC machines the I.D. on his rifles. It is deep, and very pretty.

There is an acid photo etching process that I've seen on custom knives that looks good.

Plus One on the New Hermes pantograph. You can find them around if you look for a bit. Ebay sometimes has them pretty reasonable. I found one meant for flat work and just put two pieces of aluminum angle on it to make it's vise clamp down on a barrel.I found it with two set of fonts and a bunch of engraving bits for $300. Mine has the rotary/motor driven style that actually removes metal instead of just scratching the surface. They are great machines. Machine Tools West in Salt Lake City is a source for parts for the older units.

Here are some photos of the engraver I set up and an example of how it engraves. The picture of the engraving is on a piece of scrap stainless stock about .90" diameter. I added the aluminum angles in the clamp to hold a barrel. I drilled into and tapped the four corners of the bed to accept 3/8" bolts and drilled a pocket for them to sit in when "jacking" the bed up. That enables the engraver frame to clear a long barrel underneath it. This machine was meant for doing flat signs etc but they made these New Hermes machines in a lot of different configurations. Most had the same parts just different holding fixtures. They allow you to get creative and create you own logos etc.

I have a free standing New Hermes. A few are still in the backroom of trophy shops. They are using a lot of CNC now. I would call around.

I also bought and OLD New Hermes engraver on e bay. I think it was about $250. It came with one set of fonts that were kinda small so I had to buy another set, they were about $50.

It works very good when you get everything set up correctly. Looks MUCH better the a set of stamps. Ant they are permanent.

Electro etching is a pretty cool way to mark bbls. The local trophy shop has this system and we have our bbls marked by them very inexpensively. They charge $8 to do two sides of the bbl.

Here is a kid on You Tube demonstrating the system that our trophy shop uses. Pretty simple and great results.
