Barrel length and muzzle velocity

T-REX said: I would recommend you look for an NRA 1000 yard match to attend. You would be able to have fun with your equipment and experience and also learn from the experience. The NRA 1000 yard matches these days normally have both F Class and conventional prone shooters and many of the competitors are very helpful. You would have a lot of visibility of what folks are using and would have the potential to learn a lot.

I totally agree with above. Clyde is right. Right now a hit is a hit and shooting at steel plates is great fun, but it doesn't compare to F-TR matches. There bullet placement matters. With your Savage you can be very competitive, you'll just have to buy a heavier bullet, because I can guarantee the FGMM 168 will keyhole at 1K, and as soon as they see that on the target you will be disqualified.

You've got the rifle and you know how to shoot it, find an NRA range near you and try it out. Once you do you'll be hooked, and you will meet some really good people. I like most of the guys at my range better than I like some of the guys at my church, go figure.

A majority of 1,000 yd. FTR shooters seem to be using the Berger 185 Juggernaut. To the best of my knowledge that is a reloading only bullet, that is if you can find some. 175's and 190's would probably be better at 1,000 than 168's. 168's get bullied by the wind too much past 600 yds.
