Barrel heat mirage

If I want to make a heat shield to place over the barrel does it need to be as long as the exposed barrel ? longer ? or shorter ? width ?

This is what I used, painted it flat black and used Velcro dots to affix it to the barrel. Fluffy on the barrels and rough on the slat.

How does that work? Seems like black would get hotter and create its own mirage.

Thats what I have but its flat.

Heat Shield -

I made one out of a folded pistol target. Worked great, till 1 day in moved past the muzzle, about an inch.

Instant confetti. Still using it. Its just a little shorter now.
